Dr. Andre Sharon joined MIT in 1989 as Associate Director of the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity. In 1991 he co-founded and became Executive Officer of the MIT Manufacturing Institute which serves as a vehicle for developing new technologies for industry based on emerging research findings. Dr. Sharon has accumulated extensive experience working with industry to target, develop and deploy new technologies and machinery. His current research interests are in flexible automation systems, manufacturing, robotics, mechatronics, machine design and servo-control. In addition to his research agenda, Dr. Sharon works closely with Industry to identify important manufacturing problems, develop new technologies and foster technology transfer. He is actively pursuing the improvement of the infrastructure for technology development and transfer in the U.S.

Prior to joining MIT, Dr. Sharon spent seven years at IBM's T. J. Watson Research Center and IBM's General Technology Division in the areas of electronic packaging and manufacturing automation.

Dr. Sharon received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of New York. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal, Robotics and Computer Integrated Manufacturing. Dr. Sharon is on the board-of-directors of the Greater Boston Manufacturing Partnership, Inc. He also served as the Program Chairman for the Design-for-Manufacture Committee at the ASME Winter annual Meetings.
