Bicycles
http://web.mit.edu/facilities/transportation/commuting/index.html
Cyclists are expected to obey all traffic laws. Cambridge Police enforce bicycle traffic laws. Bicycles may not be ridden on a sidewalk in the Harvard and Central Square business districts as well as several other Cambridge locations. See http://www.ci.cambridge.ma.us/~cpd/bikes.html.
Riders should have a full set of reflectors on the bike and a safety helmet (how much is your head worth?). Cambridge Police will issue a $50 fine to riders without proper lights while riding at night.
Some dormitories have bike repair facilities. Generally, these are for the use of dormitory residents only. Also, the MIT Outing Club sometimes holds bicycle repair sessions and organizes bike trips.
On-Campus Bicycle Parking [back to top]
There are indoor or covered bicycle parking areas located in the breezeway under Buildings 39, 3 and 13, and in most dormitories. The area in Building 13 has a card-key system. You can purchase [$5] a card-key at MIT Police headquarters, W89.
There is a $25 fine for bicycles secured to handrails. If your bicycle is removed from a handrail, there is a $50 fine. MIT is not responsible for any damage to your bike or lock for such removal. Do not park your bike on a wheel chair ramp, including ramps in front of the Student Center.
Bicycles should be registered with the MIT Police in person or on line at http://web.mit.edu/cp/www/admin.shtml#bikes. Registration provides you with a registration decal and qualifies you for most bike lock registration requirements. The service is free. If you are a Cambridge resident, register with the Cambridge Police at Central Square [5 Western Avenue]. Registering your bicycle will help in the recovery of your bike if it is stolen. Be sure to record your bicycle’s serial number since that is the only way to positively identify it. Bicycles should be locked with a durable “U” lock. Bicycles locked with a cable or chain are very susceptible to theft — bicycle larceny on campus is a big problem.
