The mission of the Office of Minority Education [OME] at MIT is to recognize and propagate academic excellence among students of underrepresented minority groups, with the ultimate goal of developing leaders in the academy, industry and society.
Consistent with the mission, the OME:
- Develops programs that encourage the promotion of excellence among our students, celebrates academic achievement, and provides opportunities for mentorship and academic enrichment.
- Researches, disseminates, sets forth and validates educational and pedagogical models for minority students and MIT faculty that are effective for students from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds.
- Engages faculty at MIT to take part in educational support and excellence efforts for/by minority students, particularly those teaching major freshman courses and introductory courses within departments.
- Provides services that engage students in research on campus and interactions with industrial contacts as major and enabling part of their academic education.
The OME provides a supportive social, emotional and cultural environment for underrepresented minority students at MIT. It also serves as an information base on opportunities for academic pursuits during the undergraduate years. The OME offers academic enrichment, leadership development, and mentoring programs and services that are open to all MIT students. These include workshops, tutorials, small groups on enhancing study skills, graduate school and academic seminars, academic seminars [for which students can receive credit] and providing access for students to alumni, faculty and other resources at MIT.
