Design an innovative technology for a community in need. Contribute to quality of life improvements for people living next door or continents away. The possibilities are endless. The MIT Public Service Center provides interesting paths to connect you with the world beyond MIT. Through volunteer activities, grants and paid fellowships, ScienceExpo, the MIT IDEAS Competition, and Community Service Work-Study positions, you can put your education into action, assisting people in the neighborhood or around the world.
Get involved in service learning, a way for you to contribute to the community in ways that will enhance your own learning. Service learning classes represent a wide set of choices and projects for applied learning and community benefit. Whether it’s designing a better composter for a community youth enrichment farm, or writing advocacy materials for a non-profit organization, you can learn skills that benefit underserved populations, and in turn, enhance your own education.
The MIT Public Service Center can also benefit your educational experience in a number of other ways. A student who qualifies for a Community Service Work-Study position – Federal work-study eligible – can add to their work experience while assisting nonprofit organizations with the problems they face. Or join the residential living-learning community of iHouse, where students focus on applied learning and global leadership development.
We provide advising and funding opportunities for individuals and student groups about international and local volunteer opportunities. We advise students on service group management, grants and proposal writing, and service events that connect students with faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as with community members. Whether you participate in our long-standing programs like CityDays, ReachOut, and FUP, or create a program of your own, you will find that the MIT Public Service Center is an essential and enjoyable part of campus and community life at MIT.
