During a Republican political caucus in Grand Rapids, Mich., in August,
the proceedings were slow getting underway: The participants could not
recite the Pledge of Allegiance because no one had brought a flag.
Party member Jack Pettit then stood on a chair in the front of the room,
wearing a necktie that had a stars-and-stripes motif, while everyone
