Athena Minicourse Instructor -- Job Description

The Athena Training Group is hiring students to do the following work:

  • to LEARN to teach minicourses
  • to TEACH minicourses approximately 2-6 hrs/wk during the school year, and daily for four days during Orientation week.

What We Teach

We teach the Athena minicourses, a set of one-hour-long classes designed to help new users begin using the Athena system productively, or to introduce users to some of the tools available on Athena.

When We Teach

Our yearly schedule:

During Orientation week: we teach introductory minicourses all day long for four days.

During the school year: We offer our one-hour minicourses Monday through Thursday at:

  • days: 12:00 noon
  • evenings: 7:00pm - 9:00pm
in several runs during the year:
  • the 5 or 6 weeks at the start of each semester,
  • one or two week after midterms,
  • 4 weeks during IAP.

We also teach other classes outside the usual schedule by special arrangement, and based on instructor availability.

What We Pay

Teachers are paid an hourly wage, beginning at $12.oo/hr, with increases at least twice each year, depending on experience, skills, responsibilities, and seniority.

NOTE: There are no new minicourses being taught at this time, and we are not accepting applications for minicourse instructors at the moment.

Training

Working Requirements

  • During the school year: teachers are expected to be available at least two sessions (nights or noons) each week on a regular basis.
  • Orientation week:, from 9am to 5pm: Teaching the Orientation week minicourses. (3 hours per day per teacher)
  • IAP: Instructors are expected to be available for two sessions each week.

    PLEASE BE SURE that you can meet ALL of the above time requirements before submitting this job application.

We will also schedule monthly planning meetings: no more than one each month, usually Friday afternoons, usually on the 2nd Friday of each month, except when otherwise announced ahead of time. Unavoidable class or other fixed-time academic conflicts are an acceptable excuse for missing these meetings.

Other Requirements:

  • A comfortable command of spoken and written English,
  • Previous public speaking experience, OR a willingness to learn to talk before large groups.
  • Some teaching experience, OR an ability to explain technical matters clearly to a non-technical audience,
