Program requirements
Participating students will be expected to have fulfilled the following requirements:
- Two years (minimum) of university-level French language training with a grade B or better (completion of French IV at MIT) or equivalent proficiency. Contact us if you are unsure of your level.
- At least one course that introduces students to important cultural, social, and political aspects of French speaking countries, preferably:
- 21F310 French Conversation: Intensive Practice
- 21F311 Introduction to French Culture
- 21F312 Basic Themes in French Literature and Culture
- 21F315 Cross-cultural Perspectives on Contemporary French Society
- 21F320 Introduction to French Literature
- 21F336 Introduction to the French and Francophone Short Story
- 21F341 Contemporary French Film and Social Issues
- 21F346 Topics in Modern French Literature and Culture
- 21F347 Contemporary Short French Fiction: Social and Literary Trends Since 1980
- Standing at MIT: You must have a grade-point average of 4.0 or better.
- Participating students will be expected to attend several training sessions and a weekend retreat in the spring that will address topics in French culture and society and practical questions about living in France.
Application requirements
- Complete the online application form.
- Send the following documents to mit-france@mit.edu:
- your resume or CV
- a one- to two-page statement of your personal and professional objectives regarding your stay abroad: Why do you want to go? What would you like to accomplish? What will you bring to your host institution, and how will the experience impact your education? This statement, or portions of it, may be shared with potential host institutions.
- Have two letters of recommendation sent directly from the recommender to mit-france@mit.edu. They should come from MIT professors or one professor and one former work supervisor.
- Have your official MIT transcripts mailed directly to MIT-France at E38-664.
Once you have completed your online application form, please contact the program coordinator to schedule an interview. You may schedule your interview before the rest of the application is complete.
For summer internships, your online application form must be received by October 31 of the preceding fall. The rest of the application must be received by November 30.
