Study German in Germany over IAP
A great way to immerse yourself in the German language and culture is by taking a language course in the country. MIT-Germany offers an introductory study abroad course. Classes are conducted in Germany with MIT instructors. Here is a description of the course:
IAP 2009 Capstone Immersion Module
for
Advanced Learners of German
Explore Berlin and Hamburg during IAP while communicating with Germans in company workshops and cultural events. Students must be proficient in German. For more information, please see the announcement or

21F.400 German I (Study Abroad)
Acquisition of vocabulary and grammatical concepts through active communication. Audio, video, and printed materials provide direct exposure to authentic German language and culture. Self-paced language lab program is fully coordinated with textbook/workbook. Development of effective basic communication skills.
Students are responsible for travel and lodging fees. Field trips introduce students to Germany as a site of science, technology, culture, and history. A workshop titled "Global Challenges in Energy and Transportation" is held in Berlin with students from German universities and precedes the course. The workshop is sponsored by Siemens and Deutsche Bahn.

Tailored Study Abroad Program
The MIT-Germany Program also organizes tailor-made study abroad opportunities with leading German technical universities. Study abroad stays are possible for one or two semesters and may include an internship component. Individualized study plans take into consideration the special needs of MIT students.
The study abroad program is tuition free. Participants pay a modest fee for language instruction, room and board.
Transfer credit for courses taken abroad will be arranged in consultation with the transfer credit advisors of the different departments. To arrange study abroad plans, please contact the program at mit-germany@mit.edu.
Opportunities to study in Germany after graduation
We can help place students who are interested in enrolling in a master's or a Ph.D. program at a German university after graduation.
The MIT-Germany Program also supports the following program in Germany:
Collège des Ingénieurs (CDI)
Fellowships in Management Studies, Stuttgart
- Prerequisite: MS, PhD or equivalent in engineering or scientific field
- Timeline: 10-month MBA program
- Application deadline:
- March 31st for entrance in September (main selection process)
- May 31st for entrance in September (last deadline)
- August 31st for entrance in January
- Cost: all admitted candidates receive full financial aid (tuition fees, living expenses, and health insurance)

Twenty-two students took the 2008 IAP class German I in Germany. Students practiced language skills and visited cultural sites throughout the country. The class offers MIT students a great opportunity to jump start their German language studies and qualify for summer internships.
