When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

An internship allows you to enrich your expertise in science, technology, or management with your knowledge of a different culture and language. By working in an Italian research institution, Italian company, or Italian subsidiary of an American company, you gain both an Italian and an EU perspective on the latest work happening in your field.

The MIT-Italy Internship Program is open to MIT undergraduate and graduate students as well as recent alumni. We offer three-month summer paid internships (June-August) or four- to twelve-month internships (after graduation or while enrolled in a Ph.D. program) in many corporations, institutions, and research centers across Italy. Either your host or the MIT-Italy Program will provide:

  • travel costs
  • compensation based on qualifications, experience, and length of stay
  • visa, logistics, and housing assistance

How it works.

  1. Interview.

Send us your resume, then sit down with us and tell us your internship goals. We'll share with you the resources we have at our disposal and discuss possibilities and requirements.

  2. Apply.

We forward your resume, statement of purpose, transcripts, and letter of recommendation to organizations we think will be interested.

  3. Review the host's response.

Once the company or research center selects you as a potential candidate, we will discuss its response and research proposal.

  4. Reach agreement.

You and your host institution reach an understanding about the details of the proposed internship, including stipend and travel support.

  5. Work with us.

We facilitate logistics — visa, internship agreement, housing, residency permit — and work closely with company representatives during your internship. (See Practical info)

  6. Provide feedback.

When you return from your internship, let us know what worked and what didn't. We will evaluate the program from both the student's and the company's perspectives. Download a feedback form.
