Students > Internships > How it Works

Opportunities, requirements and application procedures vary slightly from program to program. Consult the website of the country program that interests you to learn more about that program's specifics.

Most country programs require:

  • proficiency in the language of the host country
  • good academic standing at MIT
  • completion of country-specific courses or training

In general, this is how the application and placement procedure works:

  1. Interview.

Complete the online application form. Then sit down with one of our program coordinators and tell us your goals for an internship abroad. We'll share with you the resources we have at our disposal and discuss possibilities and requirements.

  2. Apply.

We forward your resume, statement of purpose, transcripts, and letters of recommendation from professors or previous employers to organizations we think will be interested.

  3. Review the host's proposal.

Once the company or research center selects you as a potential candidate, it will send you a short project proposal for your evaluation.

  4. Reach agreement.

You and your host institution reach an understanding about the details of the proposed internship, including stipend and travel support.

  5. Work with us.

We facilitate logistics — visa, internship agreement, housing, residency permit — and work closely with company representatives during your internship.

  6. Provide feedback.

When you return from your internship, let us know what worked and what didn't. We will evaluate the program from both the student's and the company's perspectives. Download a feedback form.
