MISTI 2.0: Leap from your MISTI internship
to an international project

What is it?

MISTI 2.0 encourages MISTI alums to build on their international experience by teaming with former host country employees and other relevant partners to pursue collaborative research and projects. By integrating their applied knowledge from MISTI training and internships abroad, students can continue fostering global collaborations between faculty, research scientists and peers and learn how to facilitate projects across cultures.

How it works

During their MISTI internship, students are encouraged to develop a network of contacts and identify a project in their host country. Upon return, students can apply for up to $2,000 per MIT student to launch the project. Funding can be used for travel, meeting and workshop costs.

Before applying for MISTI 2.0, students need to connect with their networks and write a joint proposal. Students are expected to:

  • Develop a self-driven project that makes good use of the skills and knowledge learned during their internships
  • Recruit an MIT project advisor (see below)
  • Recruit an overseas partner. Student partners overseas are also required to recruit an appropriate local advisor.

MISTI 2.0 proposals will be judged on their innovation and feasibility.

Funded MIT students will be expected to attend a ten-hour country-specific preparation through MISTI during IAP and complete a post-project report detailing their experience.

Applications must be submitted by September 30 and applicants will be notified on about acceptance by November 1. Projects must be completed by August 1, 2010.

To apply, please complete the MISTI 2.0 application.

Role of the MISTI 2.0 MIT advisor

The goal of the MISTI 2.0 advisor is to be available to the student/team regarding questions related to the content of their project. The advisor will review the student’s proposal prior to application. Fiscal and process oversight is the responsibility of the MIT country coordinator. Students will be in touch with the advisor as needed.
