We would like to welcome back the teams from Ghana and Ethiopia!
The summer 2003 proved to be a successful session for our teams in Africa. The JAVA programs which they implemented in their respective countries went smoothly and they were able to discover much about the cultures of Africa. We'd also like to announce that the MIT-AITI Self Learning Initiative implemented in Kenya over the internet was also a success! Thank you to everyone involved.
Here are some testimonials from this summer's trips:
"One of the most culturally enriching, fun-filled, educational and productive
trips I have ever been to. AITI enabled us to teach useful skills to Ghanaian
students, while learning a lot about the local people and their way of life.
Ghanaians are simply one of the friendliest and most beautiful people I have
ever met. An AITI trip is a great service opportunity that complements the MIT
experience."
- Jehanzeb Noor, Pakistan, Class of 2004

Our program to Kenya this summer was cancelled due to security concerns. The state
department issued a travel warning of the highest risk. However,
for continuity, we are taking the open courseware approach at
Strathmore College and teaching them online (with the help of three Kenyan students
who
have travelled home). We have also sent them books as well as
our curriculum on CDs. For Alliance High School, we couldn't implement the
same approach due to the demanding curriculum. However, we
are sending donated books and all our curriculum on cds.
Our Ghana program has started and all of the participants are safe and sound.
We have a total of nine MIT students operating in the University of Ghana,
Achimota Highschool, and Presbyteryan Secondary school.
The Ethiopia phase will start in mid-July and we will have 7 MIT students
operating at the Addis Ababa University, the Technology Faculty.
