To educate students about the philosophy of the Democratic Party; to assist in the election of local, state, and national candidates; and to increase political awareness on campus.
Our biggest project each term is voter registration. As American citizens, we are given the right to choose who will represent us in our government, a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people" (Lincoln). Regardless of party affiliation, we encourage all eligible persons to register to vote and participate in elections. (Please see our resources and registration pages for more information.)
In addition, we work closely with the Democratic Party in Democratic candidate campaigns. In 1996, College Democrats worked on Clinton-Gore '96 (New Hampshire Primary and general election), John Kerry for U.S. Senate, and with the Massachusetts State Democratic Party. In 1998, our members helped the Democrats lessen the Republican's majority in the house, and Scott Harcsbarger in his gubenatorial quest.
In 1999 we helped Erik Snowberg, an MIT student, run for Cambridge City Council; we also went up to New Hampshire to help with the Democratic primary. The College Democrats officially endorsed Snowberg and helped his campaign register over 1000 MIT students. In 2000, of course, we helped elect Gore-Lieberman and kept the student body informed on the courts's rulings.
This school year, we are providing members with internship opportunities in the Massachusetts Gubenatorial primary. Getting started on a campaign early (i.e., now) can lead to a paid job during IAP, over the summer, or a higher-level of activity when the election rolls around. Exploring this website can be a first step into the fascinating arena of politics.
