Seed Fund for Collaborative Research

Call for Proposals 2007-2008

The MIT-France Seed Fund for Collaborative Research, a $2 million endowment funded equally by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and MIT, supports budding research collaborations between faculty and researchers at MIT and their counterparts in France.

Through an annual call for proposals, the fund primarily supports travel costs for exchange between a team at MIT and colleagues in universities and public research in France. Typical grants range between $5,000 and $15,000 for a year-long project period. MIT-France welcomes proposals from all disciplines represented by the five schools at MIT: architecture and planning; engineering; humanities, arts and social sciences; management; and science.

For the 2007-2008 Call for Proposals,
priority will be given to projects
focussed on energy, or environment, or development.
Applicants working outside of these fields are also encouraged to apply.

For all applicants, priority will be given to new projects that:

  • centrally involve younger scholars – junior faculty members and researchers, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students
  • propose a balanced exchange between the MIT and French participants
  • demonstrate complementarity between the MIT and French teams

MIT-France funds cannot be used to support salaries or to cover materials or instrument usage costs. Proposals must be submitted jointly by a faculty member or research scientist at MIT and colleagues in France.

The deadline for the 2007-2008 grant round was January 7, 2008 for projects to be carried out through May 2009. Winners were announced in February 2008. The next call for proposals has yet to be announced.
