Study German in Germany over IAP

21F.400 German I (Study Abroad)
Introduction to German language and culture. Class conducted in Germany with MIT instructors. Acquisition of vocabulary and grammatical concepts through active communication. Audio, video, and printed materials provide direct exposure to authentic German language and culture. Self-paced language lab program is fully coordinated with textbook/workbook. Development of effective basic communication skills.

Students are responsible for travel and lodging fees.  Field trips sponsored by Baden-Württemberg International which will introduce students to Germany as a site of science and technology, culture and history will be included. A workshop on "The Future of Megacities: Energy -- Transportation -- Infrastructure" held in Berlin with students from German universities precedes the course. The workshop is organized by the MIT-Germany Program and sponsored by Siemens and Deutsche Bahn.

The MIT-Germany Program also organizes tailor-made study abroad opportunities for MIT students with leading German technical universities. Study abroad stays are possible for one or two semesters and may include an internship component. Individualized study plans take into consideration the special needs of MIT students.

The study abroad program is tuition free. Participants pay a modest fee for language instruction, room and board.

Transfer credit for courses taken abroad will be arranged in consultation with the transfer credit advisors of the different departments.

Upcoming Application Deadlines for Major DAAD Grants and Scholarships

DAAD Study Scholarships
are awarded to highly qualified graduating seniors and graduate students of all disciplines to provide the opportunity to study in Germany or complete a postgraduate or master's degree course at a German higher education institution.
The deadline for applications in music, visual arts and performing arts is November 1.
The deadline for applications in all other fields is November 15

DAAD Research Grants are awarded primarily to highly qualified PhD candidates, but also to master's degree holders and post-doc researchers for research or a course of study and training at universities or other institutes in Germany for one to ten months.
The deadline for 10-month grants and short-term grants taking place between July 1 and December 31, 2007 is November 15

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation — German Chancellor Scholarship

This is a year-long award for professional development, studies or research for seniors in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Charlemagne Scholarship

  • awarded by RWTH Aachen to an MIT graduate student in Materials Science & Engineering.
    9-12 month research stay (partially devoted to German language training).

Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron -- Summer Student Program

Each summer DESY offers undergraduate students in physics or related natural science disciplines the possibility to participate in the research activities of the laboratory. The program takes place from July 15 to September 5.
