MIT/WHOI Travel Reimbursement
The following resources are provided to help accommodate travel between WHOI and MIT:
- MIT to WHOI charter bus
- Reimbursement for commercial bus travel
- Private vehicle reimbursement - RideShare website
- Joint Program car
MIT/WHOI Charter Bus
A full-size motor coach is chartered each term to run from MIT to WHOI and back to MIT each Tuesday and Thursday for classes. The bus runs during the fall and spring terms but not on holidays or spring break. (It also does not run on the Tuesday following President's Day in February when the Monday class schedule is followed.) There is no charge to students for this service.
Reimbursement for Commercial Bus
The Peter Pan bus line runs from Woods Hole and Falmouth to Boston. The Plymouth & Brockton bus line runs from Hyannis and Sagamore (at the Sagamore Bridge "Park and Ride" to Cape Cod in Bourne) to Boston. Both lines go to South Station in Boston where students can take the MBTA (the T) red line to Kendall Square/MIT.
If planning to take more than two roundtrips in one 30-day period, students are encouraged to purchase a 30-day commuter pass that covers five roundtrips or 10 one-way trips. We also suggest purchase of a discounted MBTA pass through MIT. WHOI will reimburse subway fare between the South Station bus terminal and MIT for students who do not have a T-pass. Travel Expense Vouchers
should be submitted to the Academic Programs Office on a monthly basis.
Private Vehicle Reimbursement
Private vehicle travel, with justification, will be reimbursed at the price of a roundtrip bus ticket plus subway fare. Three or more trips in one month will be reimbursed at the commuter pass rate.
Reimbursement for driving a private vehicle will be given at one roundtrip per week unless there is justification for more frequent trips. Submit reimbursement forms to either the MIT Joint Program
Office or the WHOI Academic Programs Office on a monthly basis.
Joint Program Car
A station wagon that can seat five passengers and transport cargo is available for official Joint Program business including
commuting between MIT and WHOI. The car can be be picked up and returned to Stata Center garage on a daily basis. Students who wish to use the
JP car should send a request via email to the MIT Joint Program Administrator in 54-911 at least one day in
advance. Users must have a driver's license that is valid in Massachusetts. The car can be borrowed for one 24-hour period only and cannot be
signed out for personal use.
For personal transportation, MIT urges students to use Zipcar.
RideSharing
The Joint Program students have set up a website to enable students to coordinate rides between Cambridge and Woods Hole. If
you are driving between these locations and are willing to take riders, please post your details on the website. If you're looking for a ride, check the website for possibilities.
JP students who give rides will be reimbursed at the regular bus rate plus $10 per rider. Attach a form with all riders' names to the Travel Expense Voucher, in order
to receive the increased reimbursement.
Please refer to the WHOI Academic Programs Office or MIT Joint Program Office for current reimbursement rates.
The MIT/WHOI Joint Program hosts this website to help students find alternative methods of traveling between Cambridge
and Woods Hole. Those seeking rides from others do so at their own risk.
