Getting to Know MIT

Getting to Know MIT (campus tour)
Wednesday, April 26
12:00noon
Free (Sign up in person with MIT ID)
MIT Campus, Cambridge, MA
Sign up by April 14

Do MIT’s building numbers and academic course numbers confound you? Was 77 Mass. Ave. always the Institute's front door entrance? Do you know which buildings were designed by "world-class architects?" Joe Collins (Co-chair of MIT Retirees Association and Quarter Century Club member) invites you on a tour of the campus which includes a review of how the current set of buildings evolved over time. We'll take a look from the original entrance in Lobby 10 and see how the numbered buildings expanded with the culmination in 1938 of Bldg. 7, which brought to Cambridge, at long last, the Architecture Dept. from its exile in the Rogers building at Boylston and Clarendon Streets in Boston. We'll leave from Lobby 7, look at some notable buildings on the West Campus, take a glance at the "Harvard, Mass. Ave., Smoot" Bridge and, walking along Memorial Drive, enter the building from Killian Court. Included in the tour is a trip up to the Barker Engineering Library, home of the Great Dome, and a look at the newest piece of art within the Main campus, Sol Lewitt's "Bars of Color within Squares" from the 3rd Floor of the Green Center, housing the Institute's Physics Dept. Joe looks forward to sharing thoughts on how MIT grew during the 20th century.
