The CONSTITUTION of mitBEEF Article I: Purpose The purpose of mitBEEF is to encourage and educate the MIT community about the production and consumption of beef products and cows, and to increase general awareness of bovines and bovine products. Article II: Membership 1. Any member of the MIT community is eligible to become a member of mitBEEF. Someone is considered a member of mitBEEF for an academic term if he or she has attended at least one meating in that term or the preceding term, has expressed interest in becoming a member, and either adds himself or herself to the official mitBEEF Athena mailing list or requests to be added to that list. 2. The membership of mitBEEF will at all times include at least 5 MIT students and be more than half MIT students. 3. mitBEEF will not discriminate based on any characteristic listed in MIT's Nondiscrimination Statement. 4. If mitBEEF charges monetary dues, there will be exceptions made for students who cannot afford these dues. Article III: Officers 1. mitBEEF has four officers. 1. Divine Bovine 1. The Divine Bovine is the spiritual leader of mitBEEF. 2. The Divine Bovine's role in the mitBEEF organization is determined by the other mitBEEF officers. 2. Master Carver 1. The Master Carver acts as the President of mitBEEF. 2. The Master Carver is the official representative of mitBEEF to any other organization and to MIT. 3. The Master Carver is responsible for acquiring and preparing Bovine Products and other edible materials at mitBEEF events where such products are served. 4. The Master Carver is in charge of publicizing mitBEEF to the MIT community in order to increase general awareness of beef. 5. The Master Carver presides over meatings. 6. The Master Carver is responsible for determining when meatings are and publicizing this to the members of mitBEEF. 3. Painted Doll 1. The Painted Doll acts as the Treasurer of mitBEEF. 2. The Painted Doll is responsible for the finances of mitBEEF. 3. The Painted Doll is required to sign all checks and vouchers of mitBEEF. 4. Watchful Cow 1. The Watchful Cow acts as the Secretary of mitBEEF. 2. The Watchful Cow keeps a record of any events and activities held by mitBEEF. 3. The Watchful Cow records minutes at official mitBEEF meatings. 2. All officers of mitBEEF must be distinct persons. The Master Carver and Painted Doll must be current students of MIT. 3. Elections 1. Elections of officers occur at the second meating of mitBEEF each academic year. 2. Any member of mitBEEF is eligible to run for office. 3. Quorum for elections is half of the current active membership of mitBEEF or ten people, whichever is lower. 4. A member is elected if he or she wins the majority of the votes. 5. If more than two people are running and no one wins a majority, then the person with the fewest votes is dropped from the ballot and votes are recast. 6. The term of office runs from two weeks after elections until two weeks after the next election. 4. Officers may be removed from office by a two-thirds vote of all the current members of mitBEEF. ARTICLE IV: Meatings 1. Meatings are approximately once a month during the fall and spring terms. 2. Meatings are presided over by the Master Carver, or whoever the Master Carver appoints to preside over Meatings. 3. All decisions are made by a majority vote of members present. 4. Quorum for a meating is one-third of the current mitBEEF membership or ten people, whichever is lower. ARTICLE V: Amendments 1. Amendments may be presented by any member of mitBEEF. 2. Amendments are passed by a two-thirds vote of members present. 3. Quorum for amending the mitBEEF Constitution is one half of the current mitBEEF membership, or ten people, whichever is lower. ARTICLE VI: ASA God Clause mitBEEF agrees to abide by the rules and regulations of the Association of Student Activities, and its executive board. This constitution, amendments to it, and the mitBEEF by-laws shall be subject to review by the ASA executive board to insure that they are in accordance with the aformentioned rules and regulations.
