MITCAN is the African music and dance ensemble at MIT.
It was founded in the fall of 1996 by James Makubuya, who was also its
artistic director until June 2000. The current artistic director is Kera Washington.
The main objective of MITCAN is to explore, develop and promote noteworthy artistic and scientific aspects,
myths, and mysteries of sub-Saharan African music culture through music and dance. Each semester,
MITCAN holds a few concerts where several music and dance pieces from different parts of sub-Saharan Africa are performed.
Our previous concerts have included various songs, dances, and instrumental performances from Uganda, Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The current MITCAN crew consists of college students and non-students in the Boston area.
Anyone is encouraged to join MITCAN, regardless of any prior music or dance experience of any kind...you are more than welcome!
