Treat that as a 4-card heart suit: this is a club hand, unless West bids hearts! Here's a start to the auction: \n 1\D - 2\C; 2\S [shows at least 4=5 shape, no limits on values] - 3\C [non-forcing]\n Pass is now a fine call, with the misfit. 3NT is also reasonable, hoping for \H10xx or the like in East. 3\H [fourth suit forcing] could lead to 4\C, but is OK this time: East bids 3NT with all those tricks and hearts. An alternative auction, if 2\S is a reverse and responder carries responsibility for major suit fits:\n 1\D - 2\C; 2\D [long but limited] - 2\H; 2NT - 3NT There are 8 tricks on top at 3NT, and a ninth available in either major, since the \H10 comes down. It comes down to avoiding two diamond losers. If North leads a low diamond (the correct card, in the wrong suit), the hand is over. A spade lead also cedes the ninth trick - a tenth, if South takes the Ace. Better is the \H10 and a switch to the \D10. A count of tricks produces the winning play: finesse the Jack, just in case, and win the second round. The only chance is exactly what happens: North has no entry, and ninth trick comes in safely, after cashing the first eight and leading a heart. The pair in 3\C making five deserved a better score, but their luck was out. Mix up the N/S cards just a little, and 3NT would be down one on a heart lead. - Pete Matthews} [Auction "W"] 1D {Minor suit opening -- 3+ D; 11-21 HCP; 12-22 total points} Pass {No suitable call -- 16- total points} 1H {One over one -- 4+ H; 6+ total points} Pass {No suitable call -- 20- total points} 1S {New suit -- 4+ D; 4+ S; 11-21 HCP; 12-22 total points} Pass {No suitable call -- 16- total points} 2C =1= {Fourth suit forcing -- 4+ H; 13+ total points} Pass {No suitable call -- 20- total points} 2D {4+ S; 11-21 HCP; rebiddable D; 12-22 total points} Pass {No suitable call -- 16- total points} 3C {4+ C; 4+ H; 13+ total points} Pass {No suitable call -- 20- total points} 3H {3+ H; 4+ S; 11-21 HCP; rebiddable D; 12-22 total points} Pass {No suitable call -- 16- total points} 4H {4+ C; 5+ H; 13+ total points} AP [Note "1:Fourth suit forcing -- 4+ H; 13+ total points"] [Generator "BridgeComposer Version 5.22"] [Application "BridgeComposer; Views=009F"] [DoubleDummyTricks "48362483529597a9597a"] [OptimumResultTable "Declarer;Denomination\2R;Result\2R"] N S 8 N H 3 N D 6 N C 2 N NT 4 E S 5 E H 9 E D 7 E C 10 E NT 9 S S 8 S H 3 S D 5 S C 2 S NT 4 W S 5 W H 9 W D 7 W C 10 W NT 9 [ScoreTable "PairId_NS\2R;PairId_EW\2R;Contract\4L;Declarer\1L;Lead\2L;Score_NS\5R;Score_EW\5R;MP_NS\4R;MP_EW\4R;Names_NS;Names_EW"] 4 6 4H E - 100 - 5 1 - - 5 1 6C E - 100 - 5 1 - - 6 3 3C E - 100 - 5 1 - - 2 2 3C E - - 150 3 3 - - 7 5 3NT E - - 600 2 4 - - 1 8 3NT W - - 630 0.5 5.5 - - 3 4 3NT W - - 630 0.5 5.5 - -
