North and South both had maximum hands for their bidding to the normal 2\H contract. Pete produced the \S5 (low from an odd number), and dummy appeared. How frustrating for me, the best trump in Gary's hand: I could not even overruff dummy's five, should it come to that! The lead was won by the \SA in dummy, as Gary encouraged with the \S3 (upside down). Declarer ran dummy's \C10 to Pete's queen, and the \S8 was led, ruffed by declarer with the \H7. Declarer led the \CJ, won by the \CA, and Gary led my companion, the \H2; declarer rose with the \HA, Pete following with the \H6. Declarer cashed the \CK, and ruffed his last club with the \HJ, while Gary discarded a diamond. Declarer now ruffed the third round of spades with the \H8, cashed the \DA, and then the \DK. Here was the layout, with the lead in dummy:\n \S 10 \D J 8\n \H K 10 3 \S Q 9 \H 4 \n \H Q 9 \D 9 Declarer chose the wrong play, the \DJ from dummy, and Gary pounced: he played me, the \H4! Pete underruffed the \H3, letting me win the trick. This let Gary lead next, producing all three of these tricks for the defense. With all those cards and the \DQ in the slot, declarer was held to making only two, a fine result. Double dummy, four hearts can be made. - Pete Matthews } [Auction "S"] 1H Pass 1S Pass 2C Pass 2H AP [Play "W"] S5 [Application "BridgeComposer; Views=001F"]
