In keeping with the Institute's mens et manus (mind and hand) philosophy, work experience is a highly valued element of energy education at MIT.

MIT Offices, Services, and Club Resources

• CareerBridge & Global Education and Career Development (GECD)
  GECD provides career counseling and resources for finding internships and jobs, including those in the energy field. Sign up for individual career counseling appointments, workshops and events, or take advantage of the array of internship information on the GECD website (http://gecd.mit.edu). To schedule an appointment, apply for posted internship opportunities or register for upcoming events, visit the GECD's online career management system, CareerBridge, at www.myinterfase.com/mit/student.
• MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI)
  MIT's primary international program, MISTI connects you to hands-on professional and research internships around the world. Energy internships and research are available through each of MISTI's ten country programs. MISTI is open to all students - undergrads, recent grads and graduate students - in all disciplines. Internships are all-expenses paid. The MIT Energy Initiative and MISTI are working together to increase and enhance the opportunities available for energy internships abroad
• Freshman/Alumni Summer Internship Program (F/ASIP)
  MIT's Freshman/Alumni Summer Internship Program (F/ASIP) provides participating freshmen with career development training. Through a series of virtual webinars, live seminars, and written assignments, this graded seminar (SP.800/SP.801) helps students explore their professional interests, cultivate professional skills, and find summer internships in their field of interest (note: past students have successfully landed internships in the energy field). • Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program (UPOP)
  MIT's Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program (UPOP) is a full-year curriculum where undergraduates develop professional "firm skills"—the knowledge, tools and attitudes required to translate their hard science, math and engineering training into thriving careers in leadership. This School of Engineering program is open to all Institute sophomores. Students receive academic training, hands-on industry practice, networking opportunities and mentoring, with individually tailored coaching and team challenges. MIT faculty, UPOP staff, and industry professionals help students obtain meaningful summer internships in commercial, government, and nonprofit sectors, including many in the energy and environmental fields. • Public Service Center (PSC)
  The PSC Fellowships and Internships programs both support students working on capacity-building service projects around the world. Fellows and Interns work with community-focused organizations such as non-profits, government offices, aid agencies, schools, grassroots groups, student-initiated service enterprises and for-profit social enterprises. Students in these programs receive a stipend for their work, which typically goes towards living and travel expenses. • MIT Energy Club
  The MIT Energy Club job board includes full-time and internship opportunities for a diverse set of energy positions, including job openings in technology, policy and business. Employers specifically seeking MIT students regularly advertise job openings on the MIT Energy Club job board.

MIT Departmental Programs

• MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics Internships (Aero/Astro)
  The AeroAstro internship program is a strong alliance with aerospace industry that ties students' campus learning to a work experience. The program is mutually beneficial: the student gains real-world applied experience; the participating companies obtain students of MIT caliber prepared to help build systems and products. All AeroAstro sophomores and juniors may participate in this three-month program. Although most employers are looking for undergraduates, there are occasional graduate student opportunities. Employers begin searching for summer interns as early as October for the following summer.
• Chemical Engineering Internships (Chem E)
  The Chemical Engineering Department offers support for current Chemical Engineering students looking for internships in a variety of areas. The focus is mainly on seniors or rising juniors, and they can help hiring organizations connect with qualified and interested students. • Civil and Environmental Engineering Internships (CEE)
  MIT's Civil and Environmental Engineering Department runs a summer internship program to help rising CEE juniors and seniors find exciting summer jobs related to their field of study, including many that touch on energy technologies, green buildings, efficient transportation systems, etc. If interested, please contact Dr. Eric Adams (eeadams@mit.edu) or Kris Kipp (kipp@mit.edu).
• Electrical Engineering and Computer Science VI-A M.Eng Thesis Program (EECS)
  VI-A offers intensive well-mentored educational state-of-the-art internships complementary to classroom education at selected leading edge member companies who have a long-term relationship with the department and who understand that our undergraduates are capable of making a real contribution to their companies. Students receive academic credit for each assignment. This is the only way to receive credit for work done at a company or to use such work to satisfy any academic requirement. VI-A students are able to graduate with their class.
• Department of Urban Studies and Planning – Public Service Center Career Development Internships (DUSP-PSC)
  Are you a DUSP student planning for a career in international development or public service closer to home? Are you in the process of lining up a summer internship? Need funding to help support your efforts? Consider applying to the DUSP-PSC Summer Internship Program. This year, the MIT Public Service Center and the Department of Urban Studies are once again jointly funding five summer internships in international public service. Each intern will receive a stipend of $2500 in addition to a substantial contribution toward airfare. Additionally, for the first time, we are also funding three domestic public service-focused internships with a stipend of $5000.00 each.
• Political Science DC Summer Internships (Poli-Sci DC)
  The Washington DC Internship Program provides technically sophisticated undergraduates the opportunity to apply their scientific and technical training to public policy issues. The core of the program is focused on the summer months, when students selected to participate in the program work in the offices of government agencies, the private sector, and advocacy groups. Complementing the summer internships are a trip to Washington during spring break and academic exercises. Contact Tobie Weiner (iguanatw@mit.edu) for more information.
• Department of Materials Science and Engineering Industrial Internships (DMSE)
  The industrial Internship Program offers students the opportunity to experience the world of research, development, or production in industry, and provides companies and laboratories the opportunity to interact with Course III and its students.
• The MIT Technology and Policy Program (TPP)
  TPP is an interdisciplinary graduate-level program that focuses on technology, policy and the socio-technical aspects of complex systems. TPP internships enable students to learn about the practice of technology & policy worldwide. High-level connections mean that students get a unique opportunity to observe and participate in all layers of decision-making in government agencies, non-profit organizations, and corporations. Recent TPP Summer Internships have included placements at: The President's Office of Management and Budget (OMB); NASA; US House Science Committee; US Senate Offices; US Department of Energy; US Department of Transportation; WorldBank; General Motors; ExxonMobile; McKinsey& Company; and the Far East Organization. Support from alumni and company sponsorships makes funding available to enable TPP students to participate in internships with organizations that cannot offer funded internship opportunities.

  Federal internships are the best and most competitive internship programs that we offer. Some of these programs may offer participants an opportunity to explore permanent employment with the DOE.
• Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration Internships (DOE)
  EIA offers summer internships opportunities to students from a variety of academic disciplines, particularly for those with majors in areas such as Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Operations Research, Business/Finance, & Web Development.
• Mass Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) Clean Energy Internship Opportunity
  The Massachusetts Clean Energy Internship Opportunity is a workforce development initiative offered through the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) and New England Clean Energy Council (NECEC) that focuses on enhancing the talent pipeline for Massachusetts companies engaged in the clean energy industry. The Massachusetts Clean Energy Internship Opportunity facilitates the placement of students and recent graduates who are considering career opportunities in clean energy through paid summer internships across the state. Consistent with the MassCEC and NECEC's role as a catalyst in growing the talent needed by the clean energy industry, the Internship Opportunity program is designed to provide students and companies with the tools to connect, and the MassCEC will reimburse eligible companies for intern stipends.
• Electrical Engineering Community (EEWeb)

• Institute for Soldier Technologies-Army Labs Summer Internship (ISN-Army Labs)
  Working with Army Lab colleagues, the MIT ISN established this program to provide opportunities for MIT students to conduct summer research at Army research facilities working under the direction of Army scientists. Opportunities are typically available in a number of U.S. locations including Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Mississippi.
• Research Experience in Carbon Sequestration (RECS) Program
  Future leaders and innovators in the area of carbon capture and storage (CCS) can gain a unique and intensive tutorial on the subject by participating in the Research Experience in Carbon Sequestration (RECS) program. An intensive 10-day science-based program, RECS combines classroom instruction with group exercises and field activities at CCS test sites. Applicants should be early career professionals, Ph.D. or masters students with backgrounds in geology, chemistry, hydrology, physics, engineering, climate science and related fields.
• Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy Mickey Leland Fellowship
  The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) is an internship program to provide educational advancement and career development to women and minority students who are pursuing academic majors related to the Fossil Energy mission. The MLEF program - with opportunities available at DOE Headquarters, Field Offices and National Laboratories - offers 10-week, paid summer internships to qualified students to gain experience, and offers an insider's view to the Federal government.
