Focus: First-Year and Capstone Educational Experiences in Energy
Date: Tuesday, May 19, 2009
Time:9:00 am – 11:00 am
Location: Building E19, Room 319
- Please send a brief statement of interest in advance (see below for details)

Funding Opportunity
The EETF has initial funding for the development of subjects and educational experiences to comprise the common energy curriculum. In October 2008, the EETF held curriculum development workshops in three priority areas: energy science, social science of energy, and energy engineering/technology in context. As a result of the workshops, ten new and revised undergraduate energy subjects are under development and will be offered during the 2009-2010 academic year.
The EETF is convening a fourth workshop on May 19, 2009 to focus on two additional priority areas:
- Freshman seminars and other integrative early subjects/activities designed to engage students in energy study early in their educational careers.
- “Capstone” project-based subjects/activities to be offered in junior and senior years, e.g. a “walk the talk lab”
At this two-hour event, workshop participants will discuss and develop ideas for educational experiences both within and outside of the traditional curriculum (class projects, modules, freshman seminars, “first-year focus” ideas, junior or senior capstone experiences, laboratory projects, etc). The workshop is open to all MIT faculty and members of the Campus Energy Task Force. The workshop will showcase a limited number of existing subjects and/or proposals, and provide a forum for exploring and shaping potential offerings.
How to Participate
Please prepare a brief (one page) Statement of Interest addressing the following questions and submit to the EETF electronically via Dr. Amanda Graham, Director of MITEI’s Education Office, at agraham@mit.edu by May 18, 2009.
- Nature of suggested/preferred educational activity: What type of activity are you interested in developing? For-credit or not-for- credit? Class module or project? Freshman seminar? Senior capstone? Describe the hands-on, experiential dimension of the activity and what, if any background will be required of students.
- Subject matter: What energy topic/content are you interested in working with? What material should be covered?
- Target level: What level of student would you target with this activity (first-year, sophomore, junior, senior)?
- Learning objective: What will students be able to do as a result of participating in this educational experience?
- Instructional team: Who will lead this effort? What collaborators would you like to find?
- Extent of development required: Is this a wholly new effort or is it based to some degree on a previous or existing activity? If the latter, what degree of modification is required?
- Timing: Would it be feasible to offer the subject or experience in the 2009-2010 academic year?
- Sustained offering: Please indicate (if you can) if your department will be able to support this offering after its initial development and deployment (at present, EETF funds are only available to support initial development, not sustained delivery of new energy subjects/ activities).
A call for full proposals for possible funding will be issued on the basis of the workshop discussions.
If you cannot attend the workshop, please submit your statement of interest by the May 18 deadline and we will contact you separately.
