Academic Assessment
MITES employs an evaluation program designed to encourage collaboration and mastery as desired academic behaviors. Upon arrival, every student is benchmarked on prior subject knowledge. At the midpoint of the program, each instructor gives a detailed evaluation of the student's performance (subject mastery) relative to the benchmark, along with specific recommendations for improving mastery. These recommendations range from attending TA recitations and exam reviews to working collaboratively in a defined study group. The shorter project-based courses utilize learning-oriented metrics of teamwork, innovation, skill development and execution to measure improvement.
Subsequent to the conclusion of the program, the students receive an evaluation of their gain in subject mastery relative to their initial benchmark. The three-part descriptive summary assesses mastery of the material, relative performance in class, and effectiveness at implementing the recommended learning strategies suggested at the midpoint of the program. The participants who take the evaluations to heart will experience marked intellectual and social development during their senior year and beyond.
