2008 Martinos Imaging Center Symposium
On April 28-29, 2008, The Martinos Imaging Center and by the Poitras Center for Affective Disorders Research at the McGovern Institute held a symposium entitled "The Biological Basis of Psychiatric Disease". In this symposium, 17 leading international researcher discussed recent progress in understanding the brain mechanisms underlying major psychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders. Speakers included James Blair (NIMH), Ed Bullmore (University of Cambridge & GlaxoSmithKline), Cameron Carter (UC Davis), Joe Coyle (McLean Hospital & Harvard Medical School), Guoping Feng (Duke University), Jay Gingrich (Columbia University), Maria Karayiorgou (Columbia University), Sonia Lupien (McGill University), Husseini Manji (NIMH), Ruth McKernan (Pfizer), Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg (Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim), Karoly Mirnics (Vanderbilt University), Greg Quirk (University of Puerto Rico), Trevor Robbins (University of Cambridge), Akira Sawa (Johns Hopkins University), Paul Thompson (UCLA) and David Zald (Vanderbilt University)
2007 Martinos Imaging Center Symposium
On May 15, 2007, The Martinos Imaging Center at the McGovern Institute hosted a second symposium in its annual series, entitled "Plumbing the Mind: Brain Activation and the Regulation of Cerebral Blood Flow." Over 245 people registered for the daylong symposium in which eight leading experts discussed the biology of neurovascular coupling and its practical implications for fMRI and other imaging methods. Speakers included Giorgio Carmignoto ( Padua ), Anna Devor (MGH), Amiram Grinvald (Weizmann Institute), Edith Hamel (McGill), Elizabeth Hillman ( Columbia ), Robert Kraus (Los Alamos), Martin Lauritzen ( Copenhagen ), and Peter van Zijl (Johns Hopkins). The symposium was organized by Alan Jasanoff, Charles Jennings, and Chris Moore of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research.
2006 Martinos Imaging Center Symposium
On May 30, 2006, The Martinos Imaging Center at the McGovern Institute hosted a major symposium entitled "Imaging the Human Brain in Health and Disease." Over 250 attended the daylong symposium and heard from seven guest speakers, including Marlene Behrmann (Carnegie Mellon), Randy Buckner (Harvard University), Marcus Raichle (Washington University), Bruce Rosen (Harvard Medical School), Nora Volkow (NIDA), Brian Wandell (Stanford University), and Daniel Weinberger (NIMH/NIH). The symposium's guests were welcomed by John Gabrieli, Director of the Martinos Imaging Center, Nancy Kanwisher of the McGovern Institute, and Martha Gray of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST).
