The Holy Month of Ramadan requires fasting, spiritual cleanliness, community, and dedication. It is certainly no time for the MIT Muslim Students' Association to slack off. As such, the MITMSA provides several key services during this time.
General Ramadan Info ● Ramadan@MIT ● Suhoors ● Iftaars ● Taraweeh Prayers ● Eid Prayer & Celebrations see also: Masjid
In addition to its services to Muslim Students during Ramadan, the MITMSA also holds a series of dinners known as the Ramadan@MIT program. Click here for more information.
Although not official, the MITMSA community bands together and hosts almost-daily suhoors. Sisters in McCormick and brothers in New House/Macgregor often eat and pray together in the morning.
Look out for community emails and announcements regarding them!
Taraweeh prayers are held immediately following Isha during Ramadan. The prayers average about an hour in length, and at that rate the Quran is generally finished before the end of the month. This year, Isha & Tarawees begin at 8:00 pm at the musalla.
The MITMSA provides complimentary (i.e. free of charge) Iftaars to the MITMSA community every night of Ramadan in the dining room in the Religious Activities Building.
Immediately after the Maghrib azan, dates, orange juice and milk are served in the prayer room. Then following Maghrib prayers, dinner is served in the dining room (both free of charge).
The MITMSA iftaars are catered by Baker Dining and other vendors and are 100% halal. HOWEVER, many nights are hosted by related groups (such as our Persian brothers, PaksMIT, or the MSA07, etc.) which raise money and finance their own dinners- with very superb and scrumdidliumptious results; and many volunteers are needed for smooth operation. (Sometimes, they even cook their own meals!) Please see the Masjid page for more details on how to sign up.
Eid celebrations are always bright and wonderful days filled with prayer, celebration, good friends, and - insha'Allah- great food.
Prayers Usually the MITMSA meets on Eid morning at the prayer room and from there travels in group to the site of the prayer (selected by the Islamic Society of Boston).
In the past few years it has become an everlasting tradition for the MSAs of MIT, Harvard, Boston University and others to go to IHOP immediately following prayer. This is NOT an official endorsement of IHOP, and there is no "official" MITMSA transportation (closer to the event carpools, etc. are set up), but it seems to be a rather cool thing to do.
Generally the MITMSA organizes small sweets socials to celebrate Eid. Watch out for announcements!
*Also applies to Eid Al Adha
