Professional Institute

Overview

More than 40 Short Courses Offer MIT Insights

The Professional Institute (PI) offers more than 40 courses in two-to-six day sessions, primarily in the summer. These intensive courses are designed to inform busy professionals through in-depth learning with long-term value. Courses combine MIT’s breakthrough research with insights from industry, government, and academic participants. These courses sharpen each participant’s competitive edge as today’s technologies, industries, and organizations experience rapid change.

Learning opportunities

Courses are designed to allow participants to absorb working knowledge fast. Classes may involve lectures, discussions, readings, interactive problem solving, or laboratory work. Participants learn from leading-edge faculty as well as peers in collaborative projects. Some participants come to gain the fundamentals of a technical topic such as fermentation technology, precision engineering, or internal combustion engines. Some come to learn about cutting-edge technologies such as renewable energy, network coding, or nanotechnology. Others delve into supply chain network design, data-driven marketing, or high-speed imaging. All participants can leave Professional Institute courses with new career tools and insights about the impact of evolving technologies.

Snapshot

The Professional Institute, founded in 1949 as the MIT Summer Institute, brings more than 600 participants to campus each year. Recent students have come from Amgen, Biogen Idec., the Canadian DND, Genentech, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Los Alamos National Lab, MITRE, Motorola, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the U.S. Department of Defense, and Volkswagen of Mexico.

On-site Option

Some PI courses can be offered at company sites for larger groups (25 or more), or may be part of a Custom Program, taught on campus or an organization’s site, to meet company goals. If you are interested in offering a customized course for your group of 25 or more, contact the Professional Institute for more information.
