Fellowships

Supervisor Responsibilities

Each Fellow must have a fellowship supervisor for their project. Appropriate supervisors are people from the organization or community being served who have good knowledge of the project topic and the local context.

The supervisor's core responsibilities are as follows:
  1. Work with the fellowship applicant to create a realistic work plan that meets both the Fellows' and the community or organization's needs and expectations.

  2. Send a letter of commitment to accompany the student's application to the Public Service Fellowships program. This letter should...
    • outline the project idea
    • describe how the Fellow and supervisor plan to work together
    • show the supervisor's commitment to supporting the student with project advice and useful local knowledge where appropriate
    • acknowledge that the Fellow has ownership of the project

  3. Discuss work plans and schedules, spaces, start dates, etc, with the Fellow before the project begins so that everyone knows what to expect

  4. Understand that the Fellow must negotiate any significant changes in the proposed project with the fellowships staff before instituting those changes

  5. Report to the fellowships staff once a week during the course of the fellowship. The report must cover the Fellows' progress in the past week, bring up any questions or problems, and include confirmation of the Fellows' work hours for the previous week.
