Community Planning Training and Assistance for the District Council of Mumbwa, Zambia

General Background

Mumbwa is a district west of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia.  It is comprised of Mumbwa township—a medium-sized town—and numerous (~70) outlying villages in various stages of development.

The Challenge

Mumbwa district would really like an Urban Planning student to come out to Mumbwa and help them with their community planning.  They are trying to make sure the area grows in an organized fashion that is good for the residents and not an “eyesore.”  Other areas the District of Council of Mumbwa has requested assistance with include:

  • Surveying – they don’t have a surveying department or any equipment, but they would like to learn
  • Knowledge of how to construct roads to as to be able to inspect roads and determine if they have been built properly
  • Solid waste disposal management

The student would work with the Director of Works or the Director of Planning, who could arrange for a space for them to work in.  The student is welcome to come at any time of the year, and for any length of time, in fact, “the longer they can stay, the better.”  They could either be housed at the District Council Resthouse or similar quality accommodation.

Contact

MIT students interested in developing Fellowships around these ideas should contact Joshua Cholobesa, District Councilor for Mumbwa  011 260 955 992 064. Laura Stupin has worked with the Mumbwa community and can help with some background information laura.stupin@gmail.com.
