One-Time Opportunities

Help make science “come alive” for students and teachers! (11/21)
Join People Making a Difference for a day of organizing collections and books and assembling kits for public elementary school students! The Needham Science Center has a surplus of rocks, shells, displays, and even taxidermy specimens that need to be turned into science kits and collections. Come help the Center make science meaningful, valuable, and fun for Needham schoolchildren. The event will be held at the Needham Science Center on Saturday, 11/21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

To participate, visit http://www.pmd.org/events.phtml and e-mail all of the requested information to Lori at lori@pmd.org or call (617) 282-7177 by 11/11. Include whether you need a ride to/from the Needham commuter rail station, or if you can provide rides to/from the Needham commuter rail station.

PMD promotes informed and responsible volunteerism by involving people in meaningful, one-time, hands-on work that meets the needs of local charities and by assisting companies and charities in building successful community involvement programs.

Apply for a Preservation Planner Internship with the City of Somerville!
Gain hands-on experience by interning with the City of Somerville! The Preservation Commission is seeking an intern to assist with historic preservation projects, initially with a focus to help gain adoption by the Board of Aldermen of many new or enlarged local historic districts in the City. Over time, projects may include researching and organizing walking tours in Somerville, planning and executing historic re-enactment community events, and enhancing the Commission’s website.

The internship is currently unpaid, but offers excellent practical experience and academic credit. The hours are flexible, but the ideal candidate will preferably work for 15 hours/week for an extended period of months. The start date will hopefully be early fall and continue until next summer, June 2010.

Interested students should send a resume with a letter of interest, indicating particular or relevant experience or education, to Ms. Brandon J. Wilson, Executive Director, SHPC, City Hall, 93 Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA 02143.  Contact Ms. Brandon Wilson at bwilson@somervillema.gov or (617) 625-6600 x2532 for more information. You can also visit www.somervillema.gov/historicpreservation to learn about the City of Somerville and the Commission.
