One-Time Opportunities

Unload donations at Cradles to Crayons
Cradles to Crayons is in need of volunteers, Saturday, November 7, 3:00-5:00pm. They have three donation trucks coming in and they need around 10-15 volunteers to help them unload. To volunteer,  please contact Lindsay Jensen at Lindsay@cradlestocrayons.org or 617.471.8417 x117.

Volunteer to prepare a Thanksgiving meal for formerly homeless elders and/or make the event festive by playing a musical instrument
Join People Making a Difference for a day of cooking Thanksgiving dinner and creating a festive atmosphere through music! You will provide a nutritious meal for 40 frail elders and be thanked with stories, opinions, and shared holiday traditions from the elders. Please note that many of the items will be prepared with eggs, milk, butter, and/or meat stock – if you are vegan, keep kosher, or cannot consume these ingredients, we suggest you bring your own meal to consume.

Cooking will take place at the Anna Bissonnette House in South End on Sunday, November 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Music will take place in shifts from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with breaks. All volunteers are asked to contribute at least $10 to offset the cost of groceries; a hardship waiver is available if the cost prevents you from participating. No cooking experience is necessary, but volunteers must be healthy and able to follow simple instructions in English and stand up for several hours.

To participate, visit http://www.pmd.org/events.phtml and e-mail all of the requested information to Lori at lori@pmd.org or call (617) 282-7177 by 11/12. A criminal background check must be completed; you can find more instructions on the site.

Ongoing Opportunities

Assist elementary school students with their science fair projects!
The TTT Mentoring Program needs four volunteers to assist elementary school students in grades 2-6 with their science fair projects! Mentoring sessions take place at the Central Square Library Computer Room on Pearl Street on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be an instructor at each meeting to guide you and the students through the process. The first meeting will take place on either 11/14 or 11/21; we will contact you as soon as possible to confirm the first and other meeting dates. Subsequent sessions will take place from November through January, culminating in the Science Fair Competition on Saturday, January 30 at MIT.

Interested students should e-mail Kathleen Jones at tttmentorprogram@yahoo.com or call (617) 441-8133. You can also visit http://www.tttmentorprogram.mysite.com for more information.

Create a web-enabled database for STEP Education!
STEP Education needs an easy-to-use and easy-to-maintain tool for scheduling and tracking appointments between students and employers. The tool needs to provide a web interface for viewing the appointments, with authorizations for several levels of users. Your role will be to identify and assess available products and recommend one or more for STEP to implement. If you are able to assist with the implementation, all the better.

The STEP program aims to bridge the gap between education and career choice for high school students. It enlists employers to host students for after-school visits, where students raise their awareness of the variety of careers and workplaces available.

Work can be done when and where you choose. Project discussions can be done in person, or via e-mail or phone, at mutually convenient times. Interested students should contact Amy Koch at amy_koch@comcast.net or (781) 264-3974. You can also visit http://stepinspire.org/index.php for more information.

Tutor a third-grader in English and math!
A third-grader needs tutoring in English and math once or twice a week, for sessions between 30 and 60 minutes – we’re very flexible. The ideal tutor will help foster a fun but educational learning experience.

Sessions will be held at the Cambridge Health Alliance building near Central Square, 119 Windsor Street. The times that work for us are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, starting at or slightly after 3:15 p.m. Interested students should contact Jasmine Palmer at jpalmer@challiance.org or (857) 523-9652.

Apply for a Spring 2010 Fellowship with Root Cause!
Root Cause is offering a winter/spring fellowship program for those interested in learning more about the nonprofit sector. A Root Cause Fellowship is a great opportunity to join a dynamic organization and be involved with cutting-edge work in the exciting field of social innovation. While the fellowships are unpaid, there will be many opportunities for professional growth and development such as academic credit and educational trainings. The four-month fellowships run from January 11, 2010 to May 7, 2010. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until Friday, November 13, 2009.

Applicants should e-mail a cover letter and resume to Emily Silberstein at esilberstein@rootcause.org and should indicate which position you would like to be considered for (listing can be found at http://www.rootcause.org/join-us). For quick processing of your application, please save your resume and cover letter in one word document entitled “LastName.FirstName – Spring Fellowship”(e.g. “Smith.John – Spring Fellowship”). Applications without cover letters will not be considered.

Further questions can be directed to Emily Silberstein via e-mail at esilberstein@rootcause.org or phone at (617) 492-2300.

Entertain kids in domestic violence shelters with Horizons for Homeless Children!
Horizons for Homeless Children seeks volunteers to interact and play with children living in family, teen parent, and domestic violence shelters in Greater Boston. We offer daytime and evening shifts, so there is likely to be one that fits your schedule. A commitment of two hours a week for six months is required. Trainings occur every six to eight weeks; upcoming trainings are scheduled for December 1 and 2 and January 30.

Please call (617) 445-1480 for more information on the Playspace volunteer program and upcoming trainings. You can also visit us online at www.horizonsforhomelesschildren.org.

Play soccer and support 1,500 Boston inner-city youth!
Participate in the Hub Cup, a citywide soccer tournament with teams made up of students from local universities, during April and May 2010! Games will take place at MIT, with the winner and top fundraising team from the university tournament advancing to the Hub Cup Final to compete against teams from other Boston universities. (Games will be 7v7, teams must have at least two women, and each team is guaranteed at least three games.) The entry fee is $500; America SCORES New England will set up online donation pages for each team to facilitate fundraising efforts.

The event benefits America SCORES New England, an after-school program that combines soccer, writing, and service learning to combat rising rates of childhood obesity and low literacy. Interested students should contact Alex Maeder, Events & Administration Manager, at amaeder@americascores.org or (617) 265-0066 x153.
