Service Learning

Service learning is a pedagogy that involves the integration of academically relevant service projects into the academic context. In addition to benefiting the community, service learning can improve students' teamwork skills, creativity, motivation, and understanding of the humanitarian impact of a discipline.

Through service learning, MIT faculty and students have partnered with community clients to address real-world problems, including irrigation technology in the developing world, communication to support new models of rare-disease research, architectural design for housing and schools, and economic revitalization plans for New Orleans. Students have applied course concepts to address community needs, learned how to work with clients, and become more engaged in their academics. Faculty have tackled important issues within the academic context; and community partners have reaped the academic expertise that MIT has to offer.
