Spotlight

The Fellowships and Internships programs both support MIT students working on capacity-building service projects. Students work with community-focused organizations including non-profits and social enterprises. These can include a student's own social enterprise. You can create your own project, continue work on an enterprise you already started, or find project ideas on our website. We welcome a wide range of community service projects and support work in the US and abroad. In addition, this IAP, we are promoting two aspects of technology development:

Poverty Alleviating Technology
We encourage applications that will further the development of poverty alleviating technology. If you are working on a promising technology that needs field testing, community partner input, or a feasibility study, apply for a Fellowship. We are particularly interested in hardware technologies that have the potential to receive later support through D-Lab Scale-Ups http://d-lab.mit.edu/scale-ups/fellowships, but we also welcome applications for software and technologies that will be implemented beyond the developing world.

Oct 19: Serve Y Share Lunch with Frail Elders (Sign Up by 10/9)

Cooking experience is not required, but volunteers must be in good health, able to follow simple recipes and directions to prepare and cook ingredients, as well as able to clean up while standing in the hot kitchen and dining room. Individuals may only sign up themselves (and may not reserve spaces for others). After you register online, you will see a confirmation screen but receive no email message, so be sure to save the date on your calendars AND add Lori@pmd.org to your address book and white/allow lists so that the week before this project, you will receive an email message with specific details in a detailed PDF the week before this project, including directions to the project site by public transportation and by car and bicycle, what to expect, a map, and health reporting form, and a waiver form.

All volunteers must comply with state criminal record check requirement through PMD unless they have already done so with PMD. The official authorization document must be completed, signed, and returned with a scan of the front and back of current, government-issued ID to Lori at pmd.org by 10/9. Tutoring Plus of Cambridge is looking for volunteers to work 1-on-1 with a student! Students range from 4-12 grades, and volunteers are matched based on age preference, availability and subject expertise. Matches meet for 1-1.5 hours each week at one of seven sites throughout Cambridge. Elementary and middle school programs run Monday-Thursday from 6:00-7:00pm. High school programs run Monday-Wednesdays from 6:00-7:30pm. Tutoring takes place at seven different sites around Cambridge, mostly near Central, Kendall and Inman Squares. HandsOn Tech matches you with a nonprofit that can use your skills. Volunteer projects have included, but are not limited to, redesigning websites, developing databases, migrating a nonprofit to cloud platforms, and devising social media strategies. PN2K Bicycle Safety Coordinator

The Phyo Nyi Nyi Kyaw (PN2K) Memorial Foundation is currently on the look out for someone who cares about bicycle safety for the MIT community. We are in the midst of some exciting collaborations with several groups on and off campus, including MIT Campus Police, Cambridge City Council, MIT UAAP office, and DAPER facilities, to run a Bicycle Safety event during Orientation of next Fall 2014. We are also in discussion with the MIT Transportation Office about educating the MIT community on bicycle safety. To facilitate smooth communications, we would appreciate the help of passionate and committed individuals currently based in Cambridge/Boston or at MIT who can meet with our partners and the heads of departments when necessary.

The PSC is now accepting Expedition Grant applications for IAP 2014! Since Expedition Grants are sponsored by the Underclassmen Giving Campaign, we are putting the final choices in the hands of underclassmen, who can vote for their favorite finalist during the Campaign!

Expedition Grants, open to all continuing MIT freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, enable students to serve someplace that they have never been before. The purpose of an Expedition Grant is to help you travel to an unfamiliar region to do work on a project of potential continuing interest. These grants are intended for service projects that are exploratory in nature, and we hope that this service work might even set the groundwork for future projects that have the prospect of sustainable benefit for the community.

Volunteer Intern - Webmaster & Tech Development (Deadline: 10/31)

The PN2K foundation is recruiting until Thur, Oct 31st, in which we hope to offer MIT students lots of hands-on experience in working with a ""start-up"" culture through a non-profit and help them build their communication skills and international experience as they go through MIT. Some of the initiatives that we just started in the past two months include the following:

* In collaboration with MIT Amphibious Achievement, a $500 academic scholarship, a Career Advisor Program, and a writing skills development initiative.
* Fundraisers through a personalized set of handy items
* A Southeast Asia international development library project.
* (Most recent development in the last month) In collaboration with MIT Campus Police, Cambridge City Council, MIT UAAP office, and more, we are coordinating a bicycle safety @ MIT event (one for IAP and the other to launch by next Fall Orientation 2014).

We really hope to attract strong leaders and/or do-ers to apply! No previous working experience would be necessary. We are looking for people who are committed, passionate, team-oriented, adaptable, and want to make a difference/contribution.

Two $4,000 Travel Scholarships for Women in 2014 (Due 1/31)

The Women’s Travel Club selects candidates on the basis of the compelling nature of their projects. There are no restrictions with regard to the destination or the age of the applicant. Recent Travel Scholars have included a Japanese/American sculptor who accompanied her work for exhibition in Japan where she lectured, studied traditional Japanese woodcarving and conducted workshops for children, and an entrepreneur whose global work in women’s development included developing a project using mobile phones to empower Kenyan village craftswomen to market their products.

There is no formal application material. Instead, each applicant should submit to the Committee Chair by email (denbien@aol.com, or by regular mail to the address below):

  • A one-page proposal that includes a budget and, if it is larger than $4,000, proof of additional funding.
  • A one-page account of personal background and travel interest. Exhibits may be included.
  • Two supporting letters, mailed directly to the Committee Chair.

Applications for a 2014 Travel Scholarship should be sent to the WTC Travel Scholarship Committee Chair (see below). They must be received no later than January 31, 2014. In February the Committee will review the applications, in March it will interview the finalists, and soon afterward it will make its decisions. The two Scholars selected will meet WTC members at the Club’s May 2014 meeting. Also, each Scholar will be required to sign an agreement to give a brief presentation about her completed project, with slides if appropriate, at a WTC meeting in the spring of 2015.

E. Africa Summer Intern

When: Summer 2014.
Where: Base camp -Dar el Salaam, TZ. Probable visits to Nairobi, Kigali and Kampala.

Working in a newly formed, region wide, E. African Healthcare organization-EAHF- that is rapidly growing with the potential of becoming a Pan-African organization. The position would focus on understanding the structure-now a very effective "Knowledge & Learning Network" and how it developed, researching data on the growth parameters, starting with its initial formation in Tanzania. The goal of the internship output would be a report documenting the history and key factors for its growth and identifying major hurdles to becoming a pan African organization.

The intern would probably work with a local MBA student from Tanzania or Kenya. There are visa and immunization requirements for these countries that should be taken care of well in advance of traveling to avoid large fees. The founders and top managers of this organization and its key members are truly visionary, can do individuals who would be terrific to work with.

Human Rights Education, Arts, and Advocacy Intern

Launched in June 2011 in New York City, ARTE is a nascent, but promising organization that uses art, design, and technology to empower young people to develop creative solutions and bring awareness to local and global human rights challenges, fostering leadership opportunities to train others. Through ARTE's spring project, we hope to empower a small group of high-school aged students (no more than 20) in a formal classroom or informal after-school setting in the Boston area. After democratically voting upon and researching a human rights issue of their choosing, students will have the opportunity to work with resident graffiti artists to produce a public mural project focusing on human rights.

Commitment of around eight hours/week for the academic year. Start date is October 2013 and end date is June 2014, but flexible if necessary. Administration will consider semester long internships, with the understanding that the fall internship will focus heavily on non-profit capacity building. The spring internship will focus directly on curriculum planning and youth facilitation support. Lesson planning and research can be conducted from home, with the exception of weekly or bi-weekly intern supervisory meetings. While enrollment in an academic program is not required, students are encouraged to receive course credit and/or a stipend from their institution, as ARTE is unable to provide financial compensation at this time. Oct 6: Help collect petition signatures at Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Boston

Volunteer opportunities are available between the hours of 7 AM - 2 PM. People are welcome to volunteer as much or as little in that time frame. The Walk takes place at the DCR Hatch Shell in Boston. Please come to the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) tent to check in and get your materials. Ask for Patricia.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is the advocacy affiliate organization to the American Cancer Society. We work to educate and convince our legislators that fighting cancer should always be a top priority by passing bills that help cancer patients and their families, increasing funding for cancer research, etc.

We are partnering with the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Boston to promote our advocacy activities and get people engaged in our work. We're looking for volunteers to help us get petitions signed by people at the Walk. There will be two petitions (one that asks members of Congress to increase funding for cancer research and increase funding for prevention and early detection program; the other one will be promoting a state bill that would expand palliative care services for cancer patients and eliminate pain and suffering associated with treatment and the disease). It's a fun and easy activity that doesn't take too much time! You can attend the Walk and easily volunteer with us for an hour or two as well. The petitions are a great way to have our voices heard with our legislators, and they're hand delivered to them so they can see how many people care about these issues.

For people who don't want to walk around and/or want to help with additional projects, we also have a few activities taking place at our info tent.

Oct 17-19: Boston Book Festival (Deadline 10/4)

The Boston Book Festival, now in its fifth year, is New England’s largest public literary event. In 2012, upwards of 25,000 people converged on historic Copley Square to enjoy author presentations and panels, kids’ events, seminars, and a street fair and thought leaders from around the world.

The Boston Book Festival’s day-of operations are run entirely by volunteers serving in every capacity - from event producers, to ushers, to checking authors in at the hospitality suite - there are many tasks to suit every personality and skill set. Our volunteers line Copley Square and the surrounding venues, ready to provide directions, advice, or even just a friendly smile to BBF attendees. The support of our volunteers helps ensure that the BBF remains free and open to the public. Many past volunteers have commented on how friendly everyone is, and how much they enjoyed the chance to go “behind the scenes” at the BBF.

This year we are looking for volunteers for the day of the festival itself, Saturday, October 19th, as well as for evening events on Thursday, October 17th and afternoon and evening events on Friday, October 18th. Nov 3: High School Quiz Show's Super Sunday

Nearly 400 students representing 100 schools from across Massachusetts will fill WGBH on that day to take a qualifying quiz. The incentive? The top-scoring teams will compete in Season 5 of High School Quiz Show. We’re looking for 70 WGBH volunteers to help moderate and score the quiz, as well as to get teams to their testing rooms.  Teams will arrive in three shifts throughout the day and each team takes an oral quiz.

Volunteers are asked to make a full-day commitment (8:30am to 5pm). Training takes place in the early morning and lunch is provided. Volunteers needed for Girls "Technofabrics" program at the Boys and Girls Club

WHEN: The program would need to take place on a weekday between the hours of 3:30-6:00 pm. The exact day and time is flexible depending on the availability of the volunteers.
WHERE: Medford Boys and Girls Club 30 Forest St. Medford, MA
HOW OFTEN: ONCE each week for 8 weeks (10/21/13 through 12/9/13)

Technofabrics is a series of hands-on activities where girls learn how to design circuits that light up and make noises to be incorporated into clothing, pins, and jewelry. This unique tactile STEM learning program will serve 30 girls ages 11 to 14, a gender and age group that is typically difficult to engage in science activities. Girls will work in pairs, or small groups, and will learn to design and create soft circuits of increasing complexity and work with technology in a more creative context. Girls will be provided with guidance on how to alter their circuit when it performs in a manner that they did not anticipate. Because girls will be making creative decisions about appearance and functionality, their projects will reflect characteristics of their personal identity.

The Medford Boys and Girls Club is looking for female volunteers who are passionate about the sciences and enthusiastic about serving as a role model for young girls. Volunteers will lead “TECHNOFABRICS”, which is a 8 week, innovative and hands-on STEM program designed for girls ages 11-14.

Helping out in 6th Grade

I am looking for people who are willing to come into my sixth grade class in Everett and bring some hands on experiences to my students. This would be something that would occur once or twice a month and would focus on a lesson with a hands on element in the math and science field. Our students are fantastic and they would love, nothing more then, to be able t be a part of learning more about math and science through project based, hands on experiences!

The days are very flexible! I am looking for a once or twice a month, preferable commitment. The hours would need to be for the whole day each time 9:00-2:00 where we have 100 sixth graders and would need to break them into 4 classes for the activity. Computer literacy for high school students

Volunteers are needed to help design and teach basic computer literacy to high school students while exploring topics ranging from Math and Science to Economics and Social Sciences. Volunteers will be involved in creating a much-needed beginner course that could potentially become an integral part of the high school curriculum. Volunteers are needed for: designing lesson plans and/or projects throughout October, teaching the students during or after school hours twice a week for ~1.5 hours each starting in November. Time commitment will vary based on volunteer’s interest.

HIV/Education Research in Botswana

IAP 2014. Gabarone, Botswana.

Join the evaluation team of an education-based HIV/AIDS intervention in Botswana. You'll conduct independent and groundbreaking research aimed at answering puzzling questions about why Botswana, a relatively prosperous land-locked country in Southern Africa, has good hospitals and access to anti-retroviral drugs, yet has the 2nd highest rate of HIV/AIDS in the world -- with a staggering rate of 25%. The project will involve hands-teaching of sexual education in urban and rural communities in Botswana, media/video design, data collection, and data analysis.

In conjunction with funding from the Fulbright program and the U.S. State Department, we will be conducting an independent evaluation of a program that will examine the effects of informing youth on the risks of holding multiple partnerships at once. The program itself is being implemented by the Baylor Pediatric AIDS Initiative in Gabarone, the capital of Botswana, and is funded by the World Bank.

Our role involves coordinating the experimental design of the evaluation, including randomly selecting partner schools and determining our outcome metrics, data collection software and protocol.

In addition, Stepping Stones International works with orphans in rural areas and will also be implementing a supplementary component of the concurrent partnerships program. They are further running and evaluating a literacy program, which we will be co-leading with their director of research.

Join the exciting Cambridge School Volunteers (CSV) program for high school seniors preparing for college by helping with their college essays and more. Work one-to-one with a student throughout the preparation period. College Ready Mentoring program begins on Thursday, October 3, from 1 to 4 pm at Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, CRLS, the city's high school located in mid-Cambridge. Apply for a PSC Expedition Grant (Deadline: 10/9)

The PSC is now accepting Expedition Grant applications for IAP 2014! Since Expedition Grants are sponsored by the Underclassmen Giving Campaign, we are putting the final choices in the hands of underclassmen, who can vote for their favorite finalist during the Campaign!

Expedition Grants, open to all continuing MIT freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, enable students to serve someplace that they have never been before. The purpose of an Expedition Grant is to help you travel to an unfamiliar region to do work on a project of potential continuing interest. These grants are intended for service projects that are exploratory in nature, and we hope that this service work might even set the groundwork for future projects that have the prospect of sustainable benefit for the community.

Apply for a funded public service Fellowship or Internship for IAP (Deadline: 10/18)

The Fellowships and Internships programs both support MIT students working on capacity-building service projects. Students work with community-focused organizations including non-profits and social enterprises. These can include a student's own social enterprise. You can create your own project, continue work on an enterprise you already started, or find project ideas on our website. We welcome a wide range of community service projects and support work in the US and abroad. In addition, this IAP, we are promoting two aspects of technology development:

CITE-PSC Internships
We are partnering with the Comprehensive Initiative for Technology Evaluation http://d-lab.mit.edu/cite to offer CITE-PSC Internships working with USAID and NGO partners.
Work with development organizations like USAID, Mercy Corps, the World Food Programme, Oxfam, and more. During IAP, you could conduct market research, product testing or needs assessment at one of our partner locations around he globe! We are looking for motivated, detail-oriented, curious students to help generate, prioritize, and test/assess products designed for the developing world. Poverty Alleviating Technology
We encourage applications that will further the development of poverty alleviating technology. If you are working on a promising technology that needs field testing, community partner input, or a feasibility study, apply for a Fellowship. We are particularly interested in hardware technologies that have the potential to receive later support through D-Lab Scale-Ups  http://d-lab.mit.edu/scale-ups/fellowships, but we also welcome applications for software and technologies that will be implemented beyond the developing world.

Volunteer Intern - Webmaster & Tech Development AND Fundraising & Advertising Chair (Deadline: 10/31)

The PN2K foundation is recruiting until Thur, Oct 31st, in which we hope to offer MIT students lots of hands-on experience in working with a ""start-up"" culture through a non-profit and help them build their communication skills and international experience as they go through MIT. Some of the initiatives that we just started in the past two months include the following:

* In collaboration with MIT Amphibious Achievement, a $500 academic scholarship, a Career Advisor Program, and a writing skills development initiative.
* Fundraisers through a personalized set of handy items
* A Southeast Asia international development library project.
* (Most recent development in the last month) In collaboration with MIT Campus Police, Cambridge City Council, MIT UAAP office, and more, we are coordinating a bicycle safety @ MIT event (one for IAP and the other to launch by next Fall Orientation 2014).

We really hope to attract strong leaders and/or do-ers to apply! No previous working experience would be necessary. We are looking for people who are committed, passionate, team-oriented, adaptable, and want to make a difference/contribution.

Frontier Markets Entrepreneurship Research Internship

Qorax-Gollis Renewables (QGR) offers Somalilander students a post-baccalaureate program in solar photovoltaic installation and entrepreneurship. QGR has successfully won over $100,000 in matching seed money from the World Bank and has spent less than half of the amount building the education center. To really get this project off the ground, QGR is now looking for assistance from MIT-based volunteer interns to accomplish the following:
- Locate further grant money to unlock the additional portions of our World Bank matching grant in order to purchase energy related consumer goods to be sold out of QGR to finance its education initiatives,
- Identify energy related consumer products that will be competitive in the Somaliland market, and
- Help grow QGR’s social media presence."

Interns would work from home and meet approximately once every two weeks with the MIT-based co-founder. They would also communicate frequently with QGR staff based in Somaliland. We are looking for a 5-10 hour/week commitment for at least one semester, preferably two or more. Looking for Structural Engineers!

Green City Growers (GCG) is an urban farming company located in Somerville, MA. We are in out fifth year of operation and have over 100 residential and commercial clients. Part of our mission is to proliferate rooftop food farms in Boston. We currently operate a 17,000 square foot farm on top of Whole Foods Market in Lynnfield as well as a handful of other sites and restaurants in the area.

GCG is looking for a civil engineer / structural engineer who has knowledge and experience with rooftop weight bearing limits and analysis. The proliferation of green roofs and agricultural ""food"" roofs in Boston is a mission of both our company and the Mayor of Boston's office. However, weight limits and structural integrity are major roadblocks as is the process and cost to survey.

Both GCG, the City, and our partner company Recover Green Roofs are looking to do any or both of the folllowing:
1) Partner with an engineer who would waive the cost of analysis or only take payment once the project moves forward.
2) Have a student group take on a project to come up with a comprehensive list of structural profiles and of all building types in Boston based on year built and characteristics as to vet the feasibility during the consultation process.
