Michael J. King

PROFESSIONAL

I am currently working as a mechanical engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where my chief interests involve composite material behavior, blast dynamics, and high velocity impact and penetration problems. I recieved my PhD in 2006 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where I worked in the Mechanical Engineering Department and the Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies for Professor Simona Socrate. My research there was focused on mechanics of materials and multi-scale mechanics, especially the mechanics of woven structures. I received my Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Northeastern University.

PERSONAL

I currently live in Livermore, CA a pleasant little town on the eastern edge of the Bay Area. Back in Boston, I used to sing with a semi-professional vocal band and serve on the board of a charitable organization, but both organizations are on hiatus now as far as I know. Maybe some time in the future I'll find a new group out here. If you are in a vocal group and are looking for a new baritone or vocal percussionist, let me know

My fiancée Carol and I also enjoy sailing, hiking, rock climbing, and traveling around. The Bay area has some fantastic hiking as little as ten minutes from our house (the link points to a great, although somewhat arboreally obsessed, hiking resource for Bay area hikers). We've also recently been bitten by the rock climbing bug, regularly going to the local rock gym. We've done a bit of traveling, and Carol has quite a few pictures from our travels on her website. We're getting married next October!

Below you can read about some of my thoughts and personal projects, some of my activities, and see some of my favorite sites around the web. Sorry, some of these are a little out of date--finishing a PhD, moving, starting a new job, and planning a wedding kind of take up a bit of time!
