So, in addition to grad school, I'm involved in a number of other activites. I love hiking. I grew up in New Hampshire and have gone hiking all over the White Mountains (my favorite hikes are Mount Chocorua, pictured to the left, Mount Liberty, and Mount Moosilauke, which my friend James refers to as "that death hike"). Carol and I have also gone hiking in many other places that we've traveled to, including southwestern Utah, Greece, Vermont (in the summer and the winter, the Berkshires, the San Gabriel Mountains, and New Brunswick. |
| To the right is a picture of Carol at the summit of Cannon Mountain, in the White Mountains just north of Lincoln, NH. OK, fine, we didn't hike this one--there's a cable car. To be honest, we rarely bring the camera along on hikes. But this picuture gives a nice view of Franconia Notch in the background and some of the mountains in the White Mountains that we HAVE hiked, including Mount Liberty. Mount Liberty is one of the nicest hikes I've found in NH--moderate difficulty, a beautiful little potable spring and nice place to stop for lunch about 4/5 of the way up, and a spectacular view. Best of all, it is very near a far more popular hiking loop (also a nice hike, over Little Haystack Mountain, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Lafayette, but frequently very crowded), so Liberty often has far fewer people on the trail than some other mountains do. |

I've been sailing all my life. In college I was captain of my school's racing team. Now I have a beautiful little Coronado 15 named Aquila. You can see a picture of her on the left. Carol's freind Fumei went sailing with us once and took a bunch more pictures of her as well. I keep Aquila on a trailer so I can sail different places. My friends and I have had her in all up and down the New England coast, from Saco, Maine down to Bristol, Rhode Island. My favorite place to sail, however, remains the place where I first learned, the beautiful Essex River estuary. |

Lastly, I'm a singer. I've been singing in choruses since I was little. In college, I got involved in a cappella singing as an original member of the NU Nor'easters, Northeastern University's first a cappella group. After a few of us graduated, we went on to found the semi-professional vocal band Integration by Parts. Yes, I know the name is...er...unusual. Let's just say my friend Liz, who was another founding member, was into math for a while, so the name is her fault. The group has been together for over four years now, and is starting to make a name for itself around the Boston area.
Last year, we decided that we wanted to give something back to the community and also help other kids have the same opportunities in music that we all did. So we founded a charitable organization called Vocal Band Aid, Inc. Every year, Vocal Band Aid sponsors a big benefit concert of vocal bands to raise money to help underfunded school and community music education programs. This is one of the more rewarding things I've been involved in. |
