Alumni Profile: Jared Schrieber, MLOG 2004
by Jessica Rosekrans

For Jared Schrieber (MLOG 2004), the MLOG program offered the perfect opportunity for career advancement in his chosen field – supply chain management. “I knew supply chain was the field I wanted to be in. And since I wanted to be at the very top of my profession, getting a master’s degree from the number one supply chain program seemed to be the most logical next step,” says Schrieber. He also wanted to learn more about entrepreneurship, another MIT strength.

His investment paid off. Today, Jared is working for T3Ci, the RFID analytics and applications company, where he is the Director of Services. There, he and his team work with the world’s largest consumer products and retail companies to help them derive value from the data generated by their RFID implementations.

Jared is currently working with the majority of consumer products companies that recently partnered with Wal-Mart on a major out-of-stock study that included the use of RFID. His team analyzed the companies’ data to uncover the hidden, root causes of out-of-stock retail and quantify their impact. Next, he and the T3Ci team will work with these companies to test and implement data-driven interventions to both prevent and reduce out-of-stocks.

Jared’s time in MLOG more than prepared him for the challenges he’s facing today. Jared says that one of the most valuable experiences was the opportunity to partner with Reebok for a research project on demand forecasting and inventory planning for its Licensed Apparel business. “I had plenty of experience related to logistics, planning and optimization, but this was my first time dealing with forecasting,” he recalls. “It was great to be able to work on new types of supply chain problems in a real-world environment. It was a unique opportunity that MLOG provided.”

Jared is also very proud to have formed and led a team in the MIT $50K Entrepreneurship Competition, while he was an MLOG student. The team reached the semi-finals in this competition, and their business plan garnered prizes at several other competitions, as well. Although he did not pursue that business idea, Jared is now confident that if he ever forms another start-up, he has the know-how to do it successfully from his experiences at MIT.

After graduating from the MLOG program in 2004, Jared went to work for NCR Teradata, where he was responsible for the company’s global strategy and solutions for supply chain management and RFID in the manufacturing industry. There he gained valuable experience in the areas of strategy, marketing, solution development and consulting, before joining T3Ci in October 2005.

Prior to his acceptance into the MLOG program, Jared worked for Intel, where he managed logistics planning, optimization, and decision-support teams. He also studied supply chain as an undergraduate at Arizona State University.

Jared’s advice for current students that will soon graduate from the program: don’t hesitate to go out and get the job you want – it won’t always fall in your lap. Take advantage of the incredible networking opportunities at MIT, and take your career into your own hands.

As for those currently considering the MLOG program, he advises that you don’t let financial hurdles stand in your way. “The program is less than one year, and the return on your investment is incredibly quick. My MIT education paid for itself within one year of graduation,” Jared happily reports.
