Students Sharpen their Supply Chain 'SCILS'
February 1, 2008 - MLOG and ZLOG students wrapped up the Supply Chain Innovation and Leadership Series (SCILS) this week in Zaragoza Spain. SCILS is a month-long series that brings together MIT-CTL’s two supply chain graduate programs; ZLOG students visit the MIT campus for three weeks, and MLOG students travel to Zaragoza, Spain for one. The series includes talks by industry leaders, site visits, workshops, and a month-long interactive exercise called the Supply Chain Challenge. This year’s slate of speakers included senior-level executives from major firms including McKinsey and Company, Pepsi Bottling Group, 7-11 Stores and Solutia. The talks touched on a range of topics from the basics of teamwork and leadership in supply chain to procurement and global trade management. See the SCILS events page for a full listing. McKinsey Partner Alex Niemeyer gave a presentation entitled Case Study in Team Leadership, a topic many students found valuable. “The discussion revolved around managing a process from the executive level,” explained MLOG student Gene Fisch. “The points Alex focused on will help students maximize their team's productivity and better understand from a manager's perspective how to outline the process from A to Z.” ZLOG student Haijung Wang added, “His talk also drove home the message that supply chain professionals must work harder to make management more aware of the role and importance of supply chain in any organization.” Larry Smith, Vice President of Global Supply Chain for Becton-Dickinson & Co., gave a presentation on Global Trade Management: Strategy and Execution. “Larry gave an excellent view of the strategic issues that a supply chain leader would have to manage, while running a global supply chain department of a growing business,” commented MLOG student Guruprakash Rangavittal.
During SCILS, the students also visited several companies to view their operations first-hand. Some of the site tours included a Yoplait-Colombo Plant owned by General Mills, a Rockport Distribution Center owned by Adidas, and a UPS Sorting Facility. SCILS takes place each year during MIT’s Independent Activities Period (IAP), a special 4-week term that begins in January and runs till the start of the spring semester.
