MLOG Students Gear Up for RFID Project in Hong Kong
Students Prepare for Port of Hong Kong Project at MIT’s Auto-ID Center

Project Manager Stephen Miles gives MLOG students a personal tour of MIT’s Auto-ID Center.

By Adam Schlesinger, MLOG 2005

Four MLOG students have been selected to work on a research project which aims to improve the flow of goods in the port of Hong Kong. Henry Chen, Tae Hee Han, Max Locher and Adam Schlesinger will all work with the MIT Auto-ID Center on the RFID project that will focus on the export of goods from Mainland China and the Pearl River Delta through Hong Kong port to the rest of the world.

The students were chosen by the Principal Research Scientist at MIT’s Auto-ID lab David Brock, PhD, who will oversee the project. To get them started, Brock gave the students a personal tour of the center, where they witnessed how experienced professionals and students combined with close corporate involvement and sponsorship can transform ideas into reality.

Brock, who is also the former director and co-founder of the Auto-ID Center, also shared the center’s mission statement and long-term objectives. According to Brock, the Auto-ID Lab envisions a world in which all electronic devices are networked and every object, whether physical or electronic, is electronically tagged with information pertinent to that object. This open-source technology touches every facet of the supply chain and is being worked on by the world’s top technology corporations; however the standards are being set at MIT.

The four students will work with Brock and the Auto-ID Center for the next six months on the RFID project as part of their thesis requirement for the MLOG program.
