New MLOG Class Kicks into High Gear

The MIT Academic year is in full swing, and the MLOG Class of 2005 is set to dive into their intensive 9-month program with excitement and determination.

The start of classes arrived on the heels of an intense but successful MLOG Orientation. This year, MLOG Executive Director Chris Caplice added one week to orientation – creating a two-week schedule filled with problem-solving review sessions, workshops and social events.

The purpose for the extended orientation period was to help those students coming from the professional world re-acclimate themselves to the academic life and to build a foundation for a strong MLOG cohort. According to the new students, the orientation achieved both of those goals.

Highlights of the two-week period included (see pictures):

MLOG students get a guided tour of the Egyptian exhibit within Boston's Museum of Fine Arts.
  • The Beer Game – An interactive supply-chain exercise held on the first day of orientation. Students said the game provided a fun and interesting medium in which to learn basic supply chain concepts, while also getting to know their classmates.
  • Scavenger Hunt – Six teams of MLOGgers were sent out into the city of Boston to see the sites, take tons of funny pictures and build tighter bonds within the group.
  • Welcome Reception – MLOG Director Chris Caplice invited incoming students, alumni and faculty into his home to officially welcome the new MLOG class to MIT.

Also new this year, MLOG invited international students to arrive a week before official orientation began. This provided students with extra time to take care of necessary paperwork and to get settled into their new homes. Activities during that week included an Academic English Refresher Course, a guided tour of Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and a trip to Faneuil Hall.

“The programming over the past three weeks has helped this MLOG class form a cohort before classes even started,” said Admissions Coordinator Becky Schneck. “This cohesion will help them in their academic and professional pursuits over the next year at MIT and then within the MLOG Alumni Network for years to come.”

The MLOG Class of 2005 consists of 33 students representing 12 countries - with women making up almost a quarter of the class. The group has an average age of 31 and brings with it an average of just under 7 years of work experience.
