01 - When we got to the hotel, they claimed not to have our reservation and that Swapna needed to sign a receipt for $300US to "hold the room". Being the smart chick that she is, she took a picture for future legal verification. Everything ended up being okay... other than our "friend" the bellhop, who followed us around all week. 02 - Rose and Swapna in the room on the first day of our trip! (We ended up switching rooms halfway through due to a flood in ours... our second room was nicer, but it was closer to a bunch of loud, pot-smoking Jamaican soldiers. Eh, you win some, you lose some.) 03 - Rose, at Ma Lou's Restaurant. This was a great, authentic restaurant... but super-touristy, by which I mean super-expensive. This restaurant and its $20US entrees cured us of going to authentic restaurants for the rest of the trip. 04 - Swapna, at Ma Lou's. One thing we all really liked about Jamaica was the way buildings had a very casual distinction between indoors and outdoors... our table at Ma Lou's was outside, but we had to go indoors to get there. 05 - Me, at Ma Lou's. Due to the humidity, my hair was in a perpetual ponytail in Jamaica... but at least it was nice and bouncy. 06 - Rose and Swapna at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville. My first time going to a club... I wasn't a big fan. All the guys there were more interested in the slutty girls, which in retrospect should not have been surprising. Whatever. 07 - The postcard view of the "Hip Strip", the main drag of Montego Bay. I actually own a postcard of this, which has taken up residence on my collage of a door. I think this is profoundly cool. 08 - Rose and Swapna next to the stairs leading to the hotel pool. The hotel was right against a mountain, and had some gorgeous scenery, as well as some very loud resident birds. 09 - My feet. And the pool. Hey, they're painted! 10 - Rose and Swapna lounging by the pool and reading. We had gone shopping that morning (and had gotten destroyed at the craft market, I might add), so we decided to just stick by the pool for the afternoon instead of paying $300J to go to the beach. 11 - A cheeseburger in paradise. 12 - Rose and Swapna, wolfing down cheeseburgers and grilled cheese. Mmm, nothing like... American food? Oh well, it was cheaper. 13 - Discovery Bay, the first place Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica. Not too far from Montego Bay, but you have to take some really rocky roads to get there... 14 - Ferns in Fern Gully, near Ocho Rios. We had climbed the falls earlier in the day (no cameras allowed, unless you want them to be soaked), had eaten lunch in the godawful tourist trap that is Ocho Rios, and were now admiring the tropical forest that is Fern Gully. And, I might add, the mad mosquito action. 15 - Rose and Swapna, reading on the beach. Please note Swapna's "ghetto gold" bikini. 16 - Me, enjoying the warmth of the Caribbean Sea. It was so blue! Please note the obvious use of large amounts of SPF 50. 17 - Swapna and her "ghetto gold" in the water. 18 - A picture of Swapna taking a picture of me. Ooh, it's like a hall of mirrors! 19 - Rose on the beach. Check out the cleavage! 20 - Swapna on the beach, now in a more demure black bikini. What didn't make it into the picture: the 90 bazillion pina coladas, Smirnoff Ices, and other alcoholic amusements which Swapna kept consuming on the beach, dehydration be damned. 21 - The view southwest from Doctor's Cave Beach, Montego Bay. 22 - The sunset over the ocean... and my new desktop background. 23 - I seem to have a lot of pictures of Swapna half-naked. Let this be an indication of how often she was half-naked. 24 - The menu to Stephen's ideal restaurant: a combination Thai/Indian joint. We went there on Friday night, and I nearly had a hole burned in my tongue. Note to self: Indian restaurants in the Caribbean are likely to be too spicy for Midwestern white girls... 25 - The sign of the aforementioned restaurant. 26 - Swapna and I at the beach, eating lunch on our last day. 27 - Rose and Swapna at the airport, right before we fought a packed crowd of tourists to get to our gate, which was out in BFE. Yay American Airlines!
