Music Program Overview

The Music program provides a challenging, rewarding undergraduate musical education for students at every level of preparation and talent. At MIT it is possible to major, double major, minor or concentrate in Music. Academic credit can be obtained in the fields of Performance, Theory/Composition, Music History/Literature and World Music.

The music curriculum is structured along three fundamental lines-performance; theory/analysis/composition; and music history/literature. One of the strengths of the program is the fact that so many of the music faculty function in their professional capacity within several of these areas. Many composers teaching at MIT share interests in theory and analysis; a number of them are highly regarded performers. Virtually all the performers on the faculty are very interested in performance practices of various eras in musical history; our musicologists share performance practice interests and are themselves performers.
