The team has both indoor and outdoor facilities for
play, practice, and competition. There are 12 outdoor hard courts, while
the JB Carr Indoor Tennis Center (also known as "The Bubble") has four
courts, and both facilities are located along Amherst Alley. We
generally have a short fall season (~6 weeks in Sept. & Oct.) where we
play a few exhibition matches and play several individual singles and
doubles tournaments, including the Harvard Fall Invitiational and the
ITA Regional Rolex Championships. Our main season in the spring begins
in early February and typically lasts through to May. This includes
several individual tournaments (and occasionally the prestigious team
National Indoor Championships in Feb.), as well as our conference and
non-conference dual-matches. We typically conclude our season vying for
the NCAA Division III title in the playoffs. Like many other MIT athletic teams, the men's tennis team competes in the NEWMAC (New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference) which was founded in 1998. We also compete in the annual NEWMAC tournament, which we have won every year that the NEWMAC has existed. Other participating schools in that event include: United States Coast Guard Academy, Clark University, Babson College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Springfield College and Wheaton College. MIT has a challenging schedule, as we regularly compete against other New England Division III schools, some of which along with MIT have national rankings, such as Williams, Amherst, Tufts, Bowdoin, and Bates. The schedule also can include matches with highly nationally-ranked teams from more distant places, such as Swarthmore College, Trinity University, and Claremont College. We also have played or scrimmaged with certain Division I schools, such as Boston University & University of Massachusetts - Amherst. In recent years, the team has been ranked nationally among Division III schools. Our most recent national ranking in May 2004 was #14. A considerable amount of competitive experience is virtually necessary to play for MIT. Almost all current team members have had sectional and/or national junior rankings before coming to MIT. Students interested in applying to, and playing tennis for MIT, should talk to the coach, Dave Hagymas or complete the prospective player form. |
