MIT Museum Announces the Opening of its Newest Exhibition Sampling MIT on September 26, 2009

New exhibition showcases innovative applied science from 7 MIT Labs and Centers

Cambridge, MA - August 25, 2009 - The MIT Museum announced today the opening of its newest exhibition, Sampling MIT. The exhibition, which opens on September 26th, will profile some of the many research topics currently being explored at MIT, and will directly connect visitors to real research that is taking place in MIT labs.In addition to the new displays in the Mark Epstein Innovation Gallery, the MIT Museum will also be enlarging the museum store and making additional improvements to the gallery.

The varied exhibits in the Sampling MIT exhibition are cutting edge and exciting. Museum visitors will see a demonstration of the latest 3D television, learn how molecules and viruses are being manipulated to make everyday consumer products such as batteries, examine the future of solar energy and the practicalities of human spaceflight, learn about the formulation of the first ever Climate Collaboratorium, and experiment with the new HoloPod camera while looking at marine organisms. Visitors will even be able to sign up to participate in a breakthrough research study on the human brain.

"This new exhibition represents the next big step in our efforts to open up MIT research labs to the wider community and really give people an up close look at the groundbreaking research that is taking place as we speak, said John Durant, MIT Museum Director."The new exhibits are an exciting and interactive way to show visitors the sheer diversity of research that is currently going on at MIT," said Durant."In each case, the research is inspiration and ground breaking and represents MIT’s commitment to working creatively, effectively and wisely for the betterment of humankind."

To celebrate the opening of the new exhibition, the MIT Museum will be hosting Innovation Sunday on October 4th.The Museum will be free all day and will be offering special programs, talks and a chance for visitors to meet some of the scientists involved with the exhibition.

The MIT Museum is open 7 days a week from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Admission -Adults: $7.50; Under 18, Students, Seniors: $3.00; MIT ID and children 5 and under: Free.The Museum also offers free admission on Sundays between 10:00 am - noon.

The MIT Museum’s mission is to engage the wider community with MIT’s science, technology and other areas of scholarship in ways that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century.
