Arthur Rotch
Arthur Rotch typifies the path taken by special students during Ware's tenure at MIT. Having spent four years at Harvard studying the humanities and then two years, from 1872 to 1873, at MIT, Rotch left for Europe in 1874. From 1874-1880, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and in the atelier of Emile Vaudremer. As students often did, Rotch also traveled, sketching as he went. The Rotch Traveling Scholarship was established by Rotch and his brother and sisters in 1883. The roster of scholarship recipients includes over 100 students who went on to become leaders in the architecture profession.
This orthogonal representation of an elevation for "A Bath House," drawn by Rotch while at the Ecole, displays his fine sketching style.
