Audition Requirements:
Woodwinds and Brass: Chromatic scale the full range of your instrument, brief sight-reading (focusing on rhythmic reading and various jazz styles), and a brief solo jazz piece of your choice. You are encouraged to demonstrate your improvisational ability at the audition but it is not a requirement. Accompaniment for Blues in Bb or F will be provided.
Rhythm Section (Piano/Vibes/Guitar): Sight-reading of basic chord changes and a solo piece of your choice demonstrating melodic playing. You are encouraged but not required to demonstrate your improvisational ability.
Bass: Sight-reading of basic swing and funk/Latin charts and chord changes and a solo piece of your choice demonstrating melodic playing. You are encouraged but not required to demonstrate your improvisational ability.
Drumset: Sight-reading of basic swing and Latin/funk charts and performance of four/eight bars of time followed by four/eight bars of soloing in both swing and funk/Latin styles at a medium tempo.
Co-directed by Patricia Tang (pjtang@mit.edu) and Affiliated Artist Lamine Toure. Drums provided; no previous drumming experience necessary. To audition, please attend the first class meeting on the Monday following Registration Day, 7:30pm to 9:30pm in the Endicott World Music Room, N52-199.

Audition Requirements: Chromatic scale the full range of your instrument as you are able, brief sight-reading (focusing on rhythmic reading ability), and a brief solo piece or etude of your choice which best demonstrates your musicianship and overall ability. Your choice should include passages that are slow and lyrical and ones that demonstrate your technical facility.
Percussionists Note: You are encouraged (but not required) to audition on at least two of the three major percussion instruments (timpani, mallet instruments, snare drum). Timpani auditions will include basic tuning, snare drum auditions will include basic rudiments, and mallet auditions will include scales.
