This storm surge barrier protects Rotterdom. As with the Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier, this pathway could not be completly dammed. Therefore, the design includes two huge gates (each nearly as wide three football fields) which swing shut when a storm surge approaches. This structure is expected to be used only once or twice a decade.
