New York City

"By 2030, our City will be getting bigger, our infrastructure older, and our environment more unpredictable. Now is the time for New Yorkers to rise once again to the challenge of tomorrow."

PlaNYC (pronounced PLAN-Y-C) 2030 was launched by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on Earth Day 2007 targeting the improvement and preservation of New York City's urban environment for a more sustainable future city. The purpose of this section is to explore the differences and similarities between this plan and the plans of Portland to better understand how to develop sustainability plans.

Questions Raised:

  • Portland’s plan definitely went through many iterations.  What kind of groundwork will NYC’s plan need to “get it right”? Does NYC needs more measures for future evolution built in, like Portland’s last policy in its Central City Plan?
  • How do the solutions of sustainability address affordability? For example, road pricing could limit the mobility and job options of low income residents.
  • Can New York City possibly achieve what Portland did without that same sensibility about the environment that permeates the entire culture of Portland?
  • What is the role of the media in advancing planning goals and how effective are they really?
  • How important is the specific political landscape to the advancement of sustainability goals?
  • How well does Portland address the other areas of economic and social sustainability?
  • What is the role of a marketing strategy for sustainability plans? Is it needed? Is the presence of one indicative of problems in the plan?
