Commanding Officer's Letter to Parents
Dear Parents,
I am the new Visiting Professor of Naval Science at MIT. I relieved Captain Howard Trost in early June. I’m excited to be in Boston and am looking forward to the upcoming academic year. Nearly the entire unit staff has changed out over the past several months and we all are looking forward to the new semester. I hope each of you has had an enjoyable summer with your midshipman.
The Boston Consortium commissioned fifteen ensigns this past May and June. All the new surface warfare officers and nurses have reported to their first ships and commands while the new aviators, submariners and SEALS are just commencing their training pipelines. As for our returning midshipmen, summer cruise has once again been exciting with opportunity for a lot of overseas travel.
As for the class of 2012, freshman orientation starts on August 17th. The unit staff and battalion leadership are gearing up to support orientation. We will be adding a new portion to the freshmen orientation period—a three day period we are calling enrichment. This portion will be conducted in Boston and the emphasis will be on making the transition to being a successful college student in Boston. We’ve got a number of events planned for this period including walking the Freedom Trail, visiting the USS CONSTITUTION, a run up Bunker Hill as well as other activities.
As for my biggest priority for the upcoming year, academics are first and foremost. Our staff works diligently with each student to ensure the best possible grades are achieved. Those with tough courses are mentored and, in some cases, provided tutors to assist in honing required skills. Technical majors are demanding and critically needed within the Navy. Please help support your student in engineering and science majors….yes, grades may be slightly lower in those classes, but for the long haul, the student will be rewarded by successfully navigating the tough majors. The Navy is a technical service and requires officers to have a basic understanding of Calculus and Physics (and that’s why everyone is required to take two semesters of each). Push them to knock these four semester courses off sooner rather than later.
You should be proud of your midshipman’s accomplishment. We at the Boston consortium surely are proud to count your son / daughter as one of our country’s national assets!
Very respectfully,
Curt Stevens
