first-hand knowledge from previous and current Navy and Marine Corps leaders.
Students may be excused from lab on a case-by-case basis, generally for
varsity sports and classes required for graduation.
Physical Fitness Requirements
Midshipmen will take a Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) once each semester
they are enrolled in the NROTC program. Students must pass the PFA each
semester with a score of GOOD (Low) or better to avoid remedial physical
training. The PFA consists of a sit-and-reach test, situps, pushups, and
either a 1.5 mile run or 500 meter swim. Students may elect to swim the
PFA, but every midshipman must run the PFA once during their senior year.
Swimming Requirement
Midshipmen must obtain a third-class swim qualification before graduation.
This involves a 25-meter swim using any of the freestyle, breaststroke,
sidestroke, or elementary backstroke, deep water jump and exit, five-minute
prone (face-down) float, and coverall inflation.
Sailing Requirement
Midshipmen must also obtain a bravo sailing qualification before graduation.
This involves passing the alpha written exam and the demonstration of five
tacks, five gibes, man overboard procedure, and safe approach to the dock
to a qualified instructor.
