Types of NROTC Scholarships
The following Navy/Marine Corps scholarships are available to a limited
number of qualified applicants:
- 4 Year Scholarships
- 2 Year Scholarships
- College Program
- Navy Nurse Program
All Navy scholarships pay for FULL tuition, fees, and a $250 per semester
allowance to cover required textbooks. Students also receive a tax-free
monthly stipend according to class as follows: freshman and sophomore year
$250, junior year $300, senior year $350. Students are also paid for summer
training and official travel. While the scholarship does not cover the cost
of room and board, at MIT, Harvard, and Tufts, this scholarship could amount
to about $28,000 a year, or over $100,000 for four years! All scholarship
programs lead to a commission as an officer in the
United States Navy or Marine Corps.
A note on Service Obligation: Upon completion of the NROTC Program, all
scholarship midshipmen incur a minimum obligation of four years active duty
as officers in the United States Naval Service. College Program midshipmen
incur a three year active duty obligation. Certain programs, such as aviation
and nuclear propulsion training, incur additional service obligations. Scholarship
students are under no obligation to serve until the beginning of their sophomore
year.
Four-Year Scholarships
The four-year scholarship program is only available to high
school seniors. The scholarship provides all the benefits described above
and leads to a commission in either the United States Navy or Marine Corps.
Four-Year Scholarship (Navy Option)
Selected applicants for the NROTC scholarship Navy Option program are
awarded scholarships through a highly competitive national selection process.
The recipient will be commissioned a Naval officer upon graduation and
is obligated to a minimum of 4 years active duty in the U.S. Navy. Applicants
for four-year Navy Option NROTC scholarships must meet the following eligibility
requirements:
1. You must be a U.S. citizen.
2. You must be at least 17 years of age by September 1 of the year you
are starting college and less than 27 years of age on June 30 of the year
in which you are eligible for graduation and commissioned status. An age
waiver may be granted for prior active military service, on a month-for-month
basis, computed as of 1 September of the year of enrollment in NROTC,
provided you will not reach your 30th birthday by 30 June of the year
in which graduation and commissioning are anticipated.
3. You must be a high school graduate or possess equivalency certificate
by August 1 of the year you are applying.
4. You must have no moral or personal convictions which prevent the bearing
of arms in defense of the United States and you must be deemed physically
qualified.
5. You must meet minimum SAT test scores of 530 verbal and 520 math or
minimum ACT test score of 22 in both english and math.
6. You are also responsible for gaining acceptance to a certified NROTC
university. Acceptance does not guarantee assignment to that school, so
it is recommended that you apply to at least 3 of your desired universities.
Students that have more than one year of college credit are not eligible
for the four-year scholarship and should discuss other options (including
two-year scholarships and college program) with the Professor of Naval
Science at the university which they attended.
Four-Year Scholarship (Marine Option)
Application eligibility
for the NROTC scholarship Marine Option program are the same as Navy four-year
EXCEPT the minimum SAT test scores are 1000 composite or the minimum ACT
test score is a 45 combined score for the english and math portions. The
recipient will be commissioned a Marine Corps officer upon graduation
and is obligated to a minimum of 4 years active duty in the U.S. Marine
Corps.

Two-Year Scholarships
The 2 year scholarship program is available to current
college sophomores – accepted students will attend the Naval Summer
Science Institute in Newport, RI during the summer between their sophomore
and junior years, then join the NROTC program as juniors. The 2 year scholarship
program covers tuition, fees, textbooks and uniforms plus $200 per month
subsistence for a maximum of 20 academic months for the junior and senior
years of college only. For application information and deadline dates contact

College Program
Any interested student may enter the
College Program. While not on scholarship, College Program midshipmen do
receive uniforms. College Program midshipmen participate fully in the ROTC
program and receive a commission upon graduation. If the College Program
is initiated during the freshmen year, a midshipman may apply for a three-year
scholarship. If entrance into this program occurs anytime before the second
semester of the sophomore year, upgrade to a two-year scholarship is still
available.
2-Year College Program (Advanced Standing)
The 2 year college program (advanced standing) is a non-subsidized program
which covers uniforms and subsistence for 20 academic months for the junior
and senior years of college only. Students who are not accepted for the
2 year scholarship may be granted advanced standing in the summer before
their junior year. For application information and deadline, contact your
nearest NROTC unit or if you need to talk to someone, call 1-800-NAV-ROTC
and enter extension 320 or 321 when prompted to do so.

Navy Nurse Program
Four-year naval reserve scholarships
are available to students interested in pursuing bachelor of science degrees
in nursing. Selectees must be accepted into and major in a nursing program,
leading to a commission in the Navy Nurse Corps. To talk to someone about
this program, call 1-800-NAV-ROTC and enter extension 325 when prompted
to do so.
Note: The Navy Nurse option is NOT available at the MIT NROTC unit.
